Could this be dangerous/ineffective?

I recently bought a padded roller for long-reining my donkey in. The d-rings are too small and I cant get the lunge line clip though them. I thought of putting a leather riding rein through each d-ring and attaching the lunge line the the buckle and buckle hole of the reins. Would this be less effective or possibly dangerous do you think?

umm, can't you feed the lunge line through from the other end, i.e. feed the soft handle parts through?
i wouldn't want the risk of the clips hitting the donkey on the sides, if i used reins, i think. the additional joint you'd be making would mean that you wouldn't be able to have a constant contact on his/her mouth, either.
another idea would be to get two larger metal loops (e.g. old bit rings from chewed rubber snaffles!) and tie them securely to the d-rings, and use them to feed the lunge lines through.

Lead rein clips sometimes have big enough round parts - if you have a few old spares (I whip the fixings off anything which breaks or wears out) you could try clipping those to the d's and passing the lines through them instead.

I would thread the lunge lines through from the other end (clip one end on to the bit and feed the other end through.)

This would be better than attatching anything to the rings on the roller as you need to keep a consistant contact.

what about using sailing rope and clips from the bit and through the rings and then attaching the lunge lines? It slides nicely and you can choose the thickness and weight of sailing rope.
