I always seem to mess them up!

how can i improve them? i try to count the stridings but then either get confused as when to "fold" into the jump (another thing..i'm finding it quite hard to fold over the jump so how can I correct that?)

one more question..gridwork! what are the stridings inbetween each fence (ie, small footsteps one in front of the other)

thank you xx

the best thing is to cut a 'yardstick' of exactly a yard and use that.
also, train your stride to be exactly a yard. this is invaluable.
canter poles - 4 yards apart.
placing pole to upright - 3 to 3 1/2yards.
1 horse stride between fences - 6-7 yards if approaching first in trot. 7-8 yards if approaching first in canter. tending towards the lower number for a small horse, or if jumping small fences.
2 horse strides between fences - 10-11 yards if approaching first in trot. 11-12 yards if approaching first in canter. (tending etc as above)
add 4 more yards per extra canter stride between fences.

Tim Stockdales dvd collection is great for all of your problems

as for the folding part, what is your saddle like? I had this problem with my old horse it was partly because he wasn't going forwards and partly the saddle, Have new horse and new saddle and wow so much easier, altho I'm not always with him fast enough when he goes on a long one lol
