Countryside Alliance Membership needed to hunt - question

Can anyone explain why some hunts require CA membership as a pre-requisite to join them? The Chid and Lec would be one example.

Is it because of supporting the cause? Or insurance? Or both?

Just am quite interested to know because hunting isn't a cheap thing to do and if you're serious about it, full on CA membership for anyone over the age of 25 adds on another £50 odd to subscription and cap fees.

What if someone's got insurance from elsewhere? Say the BHS although not sure whether the BHS and CA insurance small print overlap each other. Or even personal rider or personal accident insurance?

Also as a side point - I presume if you're under 25, the under 25 rate membership counts as having CA membership?

Ta :)

It is mainly for the insurance, the Countryside Alliance offers a generous package that covers you not only for hunting, but if you were involved in stewarding at a hunt event or similar. However it is also partly about kicking on towards repeal of this ridiculous law. Without the numbers counted as members of our relevant organisation it is impossible to prove we have enough sway.

Under 25 membership gives you the full benefits of full price membership and will satisfy your pack. It is also worth checking whether the Chid & Lec offer reduced rates on subscriptions for associates under 26.

Thanks Claire - makes total sense about numbers too!

Chid & Lec do have an under 25 sub rate but most likely wouldn't be going out with them. Will hopefully be out with the hunt nearest to where I use a friend's ponies (makes more sense really).

Probably missed my edit but does the insurance just cover normal riding, say schooling at home/hacking? Just worked out that it'll cost me almost £40 less to have insurance through the CA than through the BHS.

I think you can pay quarterly or monthly for the membership.
Just looked at policy, you arent covered for competing in any discipline, but it doesnt seem to exclude normal riding.
Also I just read that you get £30k if you lose a limb, so its always good to have anyway!

Thanks - doubt I'll be competing as would be hunting on a borrowed horse ;) Not worried about how to pay - under 25 membership is £15 a year so not a massive outlay is it?
