We are finally moving next week and will need to register with vets (equine and non-equine), find a farrier (ideally one who understands barefoot), feed stores and general horse ‘stuff’. The horses aren’t moving up for a few weeks so I’ve got a bit of time to get sorted. I’ve tried looking for a local horsey Facebook group but have so far drawn a blank so if anyone’s from or near that area please send me recommendations (via PM if you’d prefer). Thank you

Depending a bit on where you are, Nick Inman at Intake Vets in Hexham is excellent - a lot on my yard use him, and he’s been fab with my horse through a check ligament injury and pedal bone fracture.
The Feed Warehouse https://www.thefeedwarehouse.co.uk/ have several sites and a good range of feeds.
https://petnpony.co.uk/ just outside Durham city centre is also good.
There’s a ‘County Durham Riders’ facebook page too that might have a bit more local info - I’m further north!

There are loads of tack and feed shops in the area. I'm in chester le street, there is Paxtons at Pity Me, Animal Superstore at lanchester, Pet and Pony at Durham or Horseworld at Team valley.

Vets the 2 big local Equine vets are Durham Equine or Bearl Equine.

Hooves- too many to mention, my barefoot guy is cutting down so i can't recommend him but i think Hoof Transformation have good feedback.

FB groups- South tyneside riders is the biggest local page

Good luck with your move, there is plenty to do horsey wise up here

Animal superstore at Lanchester for feed depending on which part of county durham you are in! Also Houghton Country further north (also online) and mole valley in hexham for horse bits and bobs/clothing. Pet and pont is great too but I find their feed expensive, they do have lovely other things in.. Horseworld I don't tend to use as I can't cope with the 'shop' layout lol (thats probs just me), there is also Thinford Saddlery and Discoutn equestrian in Hartlepool for non feed stuff too if you need somewhere further south
I use Scott mitchell as vets
My farrier is Grant Nuttall and he's fab although not sure if he is taking any more on atm (currently on hols)

Agree with the groups, some interesting posts in there at times!

Thank you - we’re going to be in between Barnard Castle and Bishop Auckland so towards the southern end of the county. Durham Equine looks like the nearest equine vets. I also have a very accident-prone dog so will need a good non-equine vet too (very soon if past experience is anything to go by!).

Do you know which of the local riding clubs are the friendliest/most active? There seem to be quite a few around.

I’m now based in same area (been a year now) …Grant is my farrier and his brother Connor is also a farrier. I use Oaklands vets outside Yarm..they are great and have a horspital (which we ve already used) and a Healthy Horse programme which is value for money. Best dentist is Diego who works with James Roxburgh..near Richmond.
I use Moles (Piercebridge) and Carrs Billington (Barnard Castle) for feed/bedding etc. Hope the move goes well.

You also have Rainbow vets further south who are very good.

I'm in Bishops Riding Club who are very active but the clinics tend to be around Durham

@leflynn no you're not the only one who says that about Horseworld! Lovely stuff but i can never find anything in the jumble!
