I have done some local stuff, but not county level, and have a few questions I could do with anwering, if anyone would like to help me! (I am going to Newark show on Saturday to do novice working hunter)

1. do they assign you a "start" time, or do you just turn up and put your number on the board?

2. I have been sent (1) number. Should it only be one, and whats the "normal" way of tying it to you?

3. Do they have course walks - there is nothing in with the passes etc I have been sent.

No start time will be given, some places go in catalogue order, others you put your number on the board. Tie the number round your waist using a thin piece of elastic or plaiting thread that matches your jacket. Course walk will be immediately before the class begins.

Have fun!!!

As Judastree says, I used to use thin elastic with a loop tied/sown at the end that would just fit over your jacket buttons, put one end on, do up you jacket and then put the other end on, looks very neat!

Start times normally, you have to work these out as to when the first class of the day starts, horse boxes normally have to be on showground by a certain time? best to arrive as early as you can to miss all the traffic.
just 1 number as a rule, fix it to your jacket by way of safty pins from the inside so that it looks smart.
Course walks as normal before each class, again leave pleanty of time, and be in collecting ring for when your class is called, lots of preperation, most of all enjoy and smile.

If you jump clear you will be asked to go back in to the ring with everyone else to walk, trot and canter then the judge will ride your horse. Make sure if you have small irons or short leathers that you take a spare pair that would be suitable for a big man. It will depend on the number of clears they may take people with one fence down so don't go away immediately you have jumped just in case. Enjoy it, and keep smiling even if it all goes wrong because the judge may not have noticed!

Make sure you are wearing your full kit (i.e. hat and jacket) when you walk the course - the rules of the SHB say you should do this, and in the past people have been asked to leave the ring if not correctly dressed.
Also, remember that your horse may wear boots during the jumping section, but not during the showing section. No other tack may be altered betweent he jumping and showing sections.

Brilliant idea re the thin elastic for the number. I have a length of cotton tape that matches/blends with my jacket, I thread one end through the buttonhole at my waist, tie a neat bow, slide the bow inside the jacket and do up the button.

Have fond memories of Newark show - once won a Young Farmers craft competition and also came 3rd in the Small Hunter class.
