Rant. Grrrrrrrr. I have finally lost patience with that blasted chestnut mare that I'm stuck with!

She has annoyed me so much I've shut her in a paddock by herself, evil witch.
I have four bigger horses in one paddock with a round bale, what have I been watching her do all morning? Run around and around the bale chasing the others off, even the stallion, why don't they just give her what for?! But no, they just stand there looking miserable darting in for a mouthful of hay when they can, silly sods.

I have had her here for a year, she has never been hungry, or mistreated (although I do have evil thoughts about her) so why is she such a cow? She is now marching up and down the fenceline in a complete strop totally ignoring the pile of hay she has. She doesn't even like the other horses and is right next to them so she can't play the "I've been separated and isolated" card.

Tough, she's there and there she jolly well stays until she goes to market. In fact, the way I feel, I'd give her away to the next Mennonite who comes down the road right now.

(and that is a threat worth behaving to avoid!)

The Ontarian version of the Amish, horses are their means of transport, and they trot everywhere, very fast. Locally they tend to buy up the cheap standardbreds that haven't made it on the track.

Perhaps, fortunately, for the cowbag she is a chestnut QH.

sounds to me like she is the dominant mare in the herd... which is completely natural... she cant help being a horse - she not doing it to piss you off

Why dont you just put lots of piles of hay out, problem sorted!

You think it would be that easy wouldn't you? That's just plain common sense, there can be 10 piles of hay and she will TROT around from one to another chasing the others away, at present there is one round bale and about half a dozen piles of hay between 4 horses, she still does it. She is never still and doesn't keep weight on, what concerns me most is that my other horses don't have a chance to eat and keep condition either, with four months of snow and -15C average temperatures coming up it isn't a situation I can put up with, especially when two of her companions are in foal.

Yes, she is the dominant mare, I know she isn't doing it to annoy me but it does, the irritating thing is that she isn't even mine, for various legal reasons she is stuck here for the foreseeable future. Anyway, right now it's freezing out there, blowing a gale with a snow warning up, and she is lying down in her run in shed like lady muck, so we're all happy now.

My pony shares with another who is a bit like this (only not so extreme). Luckily mine is a greedy little so & so & when his 'mate' chases him off a pile of hay he grabs a huge mouthful to take with him.

She sounds horrible that mare!
