I've just purchased a 2 1/2 cob x TB coloured. Bit of a rescue case. He's very well marked but I think he has slight cow hocks. How will this affect me in the show ring and is this something that can improve over time?
Thanks guys

As usual it all depends on how bad and to what level you wish to show. Not too mention individual judges
It can improve with correct and very regular farriery and work

To a point breed will also come into it

If he's only 2 1/2 is it just that hes growing and is a bit bum high making his hinds turn in a bit? I bought my welsh D mare at six months and she went through a phase at 2ish where I wouldn't have taken her anywhere near a show ring as her hocks practically touched she was so bum high! She had already won at county level as a yearling and went on to win plenty at the highest level in hand and under saddle again once she grew out of that phase!

Just get robert oliver to ride him and you'll win whatever the conformation is... (do I sound bitter?)

Yes you sound bitter .
OP often as horses muscle up and are trained and developed properly they look a lot less cow hocked than they did when they where younger .
However it's a serious fault in the show horse .

Ride and produce your own, take on the pro's, beat them and have a quiet smile to yourself. That's what we did and then refused to sell the horse to them.

Back to the subject of cow hocks, they belong on a cow or a Shire.

They are conformational faults, not really fixable. But you can hide them if you are tricky and clever in how you stand a horse. My mare has one cow hocked leg but will stand square and stretches just enough to hide it.
