Hi - does anyone still have the copy of H&H with the article about requirements for lorry driving? Thought it would never apply to us and have given it away! Currently considering setting up horsebox hire with driver service - so wanted to look into legislation. Would be non HGV. I know driver will need CPC, and different insurance - wondered if there was lots more to it as well? Not expecting to make a fortune from it, or even a living - but something to help towards lorry running costs. Thoughts? Would this be a complete waste of time? Thanks

was that the one with Paul Tapner going through all the paperwork for driving a lorry?
If so I might still have it, shall have a hunt around!

If its non hgv IE 3.5 ton you dont need it, over 3.5 ton it gets very serious and the cpc is the least of your worrys as you will need a operators licence which is very involved IE planing permision for where you keep the lorry and conditions of use , how you maintain the lorry and your finaces have to be good with about 8k in the bank...

Thanks very much for that - this is exactly the sort of information I wanted to look into (which I presume will be what makes it either not worthwhile doing, or sticking to 3.5 tonne lorry - which is not my preference) Thank you.

Yes sorry to sound negative but you would need a lot of work at a good rate to make it pay ie full time IMHO for a hgv ....

While it might not be what I wanted to hear, better to be realistic! I was trying to find a way to justify having a 7.5 lorry over trailer with living (because I like to be able to get through to the horses) - and thought I had hit on an idea as husband would have time to do this, and is a very considerate driver for horses...but I did think the legislation around it was likely to make it impractical. Thanks again

If this is referring the the driver cpc and not the operator cpc then I am your man

Are you intending to drive a LGV (a vehicle over 3.5 tonnes) COMMERCIALLY or just PRIVATELY?

Careful with the word commercial as it is not the same as hire or reward

If private LGV driving only then forget about the driver cpc as it is only for commercial LGV drivers

Thanks - this is what I am trying to find out more about. The primary use of the lorry would be personal, but I wanted to look into the possibility of also using it sometimes for hire with a driver - but depending on legislation around that I guess depends on if that is feasible. Hopefully the H and H article will make this a bit clearer. Sounds like from prior posts though that we would have to get operators licence etc, which for part time business doesn't sound like it would be worth the aggravation or be financially viable. Thanks

It is very unlikely to be financially viable if done on a very part time basis

If intending to drive any LGV (over 3.5 tonnes) commercially at any time in the future then the driver cpc DQC card will be required with the exception of being on aquired/grandfather rights until 09/09/2014
