Ok so serious dust allergy horse last night managed to bust his way into a shed containing straw- old dusty straw at that.
Today daughter ride and of course he coughed the whole way. He's not coughing all the time just ridden.
Problem is he's booked in for his first 90 ode next Saturday.
As some may remember from not so long ago I was panicking daughter had lost interest but recently she's been great and this event has been so looked forward to that I don't want to risk having to pull out or retire once there.
He may well be fine but it may be too late in a few days?
How long does ventipulmin take yo kick in? Wondering if I should pop down tomorrow to the vets in-case

I'd be giving him vic up his nose to help clear the airways, and get a natural supplement for the breathing. The trouble about ventapulmin is that it is very expensive, and once you stop giving it, the symptoms tend to come back. I've found that the "Thymus" supplement from Folklore practice has been very good, as it boosts the immune system as well.

Am I the only one to read the title as "rubbishing" Ventipulmin ? To be fair, not rubbishing Ventipulmin as all - but agree with poiuytrewq, is it a banned substance ?

I know it can't be used under jockey club rules.

Does the vet/anyone near you have a nebuliser you could borrow? We use it for the racehorses, mostly with just balsamic air (pretty much just Vic's) in it. It's great.

Sorry! No pretty much think ventipulmin is great stuff but not wanting to jump the gun and use when not essential and tbh in a few days he *should have stopped coughing as we have removed the source. Im just erring on the safe side.
EKW yes actually the yard I do a bit for has one. No idea what they put in it and unfortunately the guy in charge is away today but definitely a plan if he's still coughing say by Tuesday. :)

Even if you run pure mineral water through it (not tap water) the steam will clear the airways enough. Kind of like you sticking your head under a towel over a bowl of steaming water.

In which case I wouldn't worry about competing on it, have a chat with your vet tomorrow and monitor him closely during the week.

Lincoln Koff Syrup might be what PF is trying to think of. Contains liquorice, which is an expectorant. Lovely stuff (I've tasted it!!). I also recommend the Global Herbs Airways Plus. Not really a fan of ready made supplements, but it's been vital for my two who seem to react to mould spores in the grass.

I also use the Lincoln stuff and it definitely works but you have to give them quite a bit 3 times a day religiously I think I give about 30 mls each time and soak all hay and within a few days the coughing is much less, what's have you got to loose buying some it's £6 and my horses love it I even use it to bute into them it's brilliant stuff.

I agree re Vic, just a tiny smudge in each nostril can work wonders. Be careful where you spread it though as can " burn" the sensitive pink areas I have heard. I used to use this to great effect with my NF pony who suffered from a life long allergy/reaction which made her cough from time to time. This was caused by something as simple as a change in the weather. I did use garlic at one time and also ventapulmin when needed. This problem was her Achilles heel but she still managed to carry younger, smaller riders until she was 27 yrs old and lived on for another couple of years.

He has a pink nose all round, might not be the best idea if it burns. On the same idea though I did used to use it rubbed down a horses neck successfully.
During a winter cough attack nothing much will help, certainly no cough syrup type things however this is different in that it was a one off cause so hopefully he will shrug it off.
I may just try a combo of all these things, can't do any harm can they.
Thanks everyone!

I used one years ago that smelt like roast chicken. Think it was Pro Equine. It worked better than ventipulmin for my old horse - but that was him on a field of buttercups that was causing his coughing.

Yep, I did have a look online. Pretty sure my vet would give it to me without a visit so am going to see how he is ridden wise today and go from there.
Not sure what his problem is right now but he escaped again this morning, broke the fence so all had to come in. Then he bust out of the yard into a pen with the others. We returned to him eating dry hay and ponies thinking it was Christmas tucking into a net of haylage:(
This is a horse who has never ever escaped in his life! Even if the others trash a temporary fence he stays the correct side!
