With the change in just a couple of weeks from deep deep mud to bone dry ground my pony's hooves, feet and heels seem dry already. Noticed tonight when picking out one of his front feet that this crack had appeared running along the frog. Not noticed one before like this, is is likely to cause problems if deep? Can infection get in or would it just be a bit tender when pressure is applied on the frog as he moves as I assume it would pull the crack further apart? Sorry pic is small, on my mobile phone so hope it's visible OK.

Picture has come out just fine.

I would be interested in any answers you get, my horse is unshod and I've noticed that her frog, sole and hooves seem to be very 'dry'.

Is there something that should be used to 'moisturise' them?

I would ask blacksmith what he would recommend. I have been using sudocream on my horse sheath area to protect him from flies, it is good for a multitude of sins. And i can highly recommend it why not give it try or vasaline, something to soften the frog up a bit!!!
