Hi,

The horse I am working with has a crack on his right hind hoof, and I'm just looking for advice on keeping on top of it. The farrier has been out and he just trimmed the hoof and the vet has suggested getting a Ridersrasp to keep on top of the trimming.

I'm just wondering if anyone has any tips to strengthen the hooves or to stop the crack getting any bigger.

Thanks :)

Have you a picture of the crack? Is it just in the lower part of the hoof or does it go up into the coronet band? How long has he had it?

You stop it getting any bigger by trying to keep the sides rasped so the ground doesn't add pressure. It depends whether it is growing down from the coronary band (from an injury) or up from the ground. I would be adding something like biotin to improve the quality of the horn but remember it takes months for new improved horn to grow down and in that time you need to make sure the pressure doesn't widen the crack at the ground surface.

I don't know how to add a picture to this hahah

Its growing up from the ground.

The farrier is coming out again soon so hopefully be able to get it sorted this time

He has had it for a while now but it is no where near as large as the last time he got his feet done. I'll look into getting some biotin for him.

Thanks :)
