Im not usually into hoof preparations as my old blacksmith reckoned they didnt work and were just a way of making us part with more money but I was a bit shocked tonight at how cracked my boys feet are. He is shod all round every 6 weeks and usually has good feet, he is fed Top Spec balancer, Alfa A and a handful of mix. I know the weather doesnt help but does anyone use anything that actually works as at this rate he will lose shoes and have nothing to nail to

My horse had truly awful feet when her shoes came off for her to be turned away a year ago. Farrier and vet said (while she was shod) that her feet looked fab, shoes came off and they cracked off and looked dreadful. She was on straight biotin for six months and had Conrucrescine rubbed into the cracks every other day for six months, and nine months later my vet and my farrier were very, very impressed. Her feet are now starting to crack again in the dry weather, I am going to put her on TopSpec AntiLam anyway (has biotin in it, as does the normal TopSpec you are feeding) and when I remember I will take the Cornucrescine up to the yard again. It did wonders for my nails too!

Thanks, Ive got some of this somewhere

Any tips on how to apply it, I remember it being like gluey gunk.

I was advised to use gloves, but TBH it did my nails no end of good so I didn't bother!

I got a small amount and rubbed it in and around the crack, both on the sole side of the crack and on the outer wall side. Don't get it on the coronary band.

I'll second the Biotin.

Both my pair are fed Top Spec, but neither of their feet were brill. (one is shod, one isn't, live out 24/7) and they both had developed cracks, so I decided to give Biotin a go.

They have just improved more and more and the very long cracks have all nearly grown out now.

My farrier noticed a difference and asked what I had changed!

Thanks everyone.
Out of interest, why shouldnt I get it ont the coronary band? Always thought this was where you put it to aid growth?
Also my boys cracks are extending from his clench holes not individual ones.
Heard of Kevin Bacon, will have a look at that too.

I may be being stupid there - I think that's Keratex!! As a side-note, Keratex was totally useless on my horse...

Cornecresin can be rubbed into the coronet band but Keratex is the one that shouldn't go near it. My boys feet improved loads on Topspec but are still needing a little bit more so may swap my Good Doer for some Healthy Hooves??

ile 3rd biotin, i bought a horse last year her hooves were a mess, all cracked and split, put her on biotin, happy hoof and moisturised every day, 6 months later her hooves were fab.
