Schooled the boy yesterday. Been doing some serious work on his canter and self carriage/correctness. Was planning on working on our Travers and half pass but he was so sharp and fiery we weren't going to get anywhere without unnecessary stress. So I changed the plan and worked on our medium trot which is getting really good - coming back cleanly was much better. Decided to use the sharpness against him and try and get some medium canter instead of faster canter and he totally clicked and started launching from the quarters, quite to both our surprise and he came back beautifully. Not wanting to do much more of that I figured we'd try our simple changes as he was being so handy in the canter. Not so good. Fab walk to canters every time, but the canter to walks were disasters. Just wanted to jog. So my serpentine with changes over the center line were not over the center but wherever he decided to walk. He adores his canter and it all just got a bit too exciting I think. All this cantering, medium cantering, walk to canters. All his Christmases had come at once. Not sure we'll ever get proper changes as he's so sharp in canter and he gets very worried but I was super pleased with his medium canter work. Even got a bit of counter canter!
Just thought I'd share as medium canter has been a bit of a battle for a while as he thinks all aids in canter are for faster!
