After a trip to A&E last night, I *may* have a cracked pelvis. The doctor couldn't see the point in sending for xrays as it's not something they can treat, and therefore felt it would be a waste of time.

Just wondering if any of you on here have had a similar injury (mine was caused by a good old-fashioned cow-kick) and if so, how long you waited to get back in the saddle?!? I'm quite tempted to try a very gentle, walk-only ride tomorrow, but the couple of horsey people I mentioned this to were horrified, and said I should wait a few weeks. Any thoughts would be appreciated, I had hoped to start competing again this month!!

Cadbury's Roses and wine for everyone...

Wildrider, you are aptly named, with a possible cracked pelvis, I wouldnt even try to ride. I'd be tempted, but i've learned the hard way, just because it doesn't hurt, doesn't mean it's not doing damage. Rest yourself for at least 4 weeks, and really rest, not just not riding. I did huge damage to my knee 12 years ago, it hurt like hell for a few weeks, but when it didnt, i went back riding, still suffering for it. I can be walking down the street and bang, I'll fall, as my knee will go. Please be patient with your injury, if you dont, you'll pay for it in the long run. xx

I fractured my pelvis when I was 16, hobbled about on crutches for ages. Was told no to ride for 12 weeks, rode after 4 with 1 leg with no stirrup, including jumping etc. I think this is to blame for the reason I can still feel the breakage now. :(

My YO has broken hers in 3 places. It has been pinned to stop it moving. She had three separate sets of X-rays and a ct scan to confirm the fractures. She will be in crutches for 3 months at least (they said that before they wanted her to have op)

I'd still want an xray to confirm it personally otherwise you could be wandering around being cautious for nothing or you may do the opposite and get on and ride, fall off and make it 10 times worse!

Odd they didnt xray you. If you are in a lot of pain I would go back and get a second opnion!

having said that if you are thinking of going for a ride today I doubt you ave broken it!

You shouldn't ride for minimum 4 weeks. Opening your pelvis up as you do to ride could worsen the crack into an actual break dependant on where it is- can't believe Dr didn't x ray pelvic fractures can be a life threatening injury.
If you ride and make it worse you will be off longer- and risk internal bleeding- the pelvis holds lots of blood vessels.
Did you not ask the Dr how long?

Fractured my pelvis this summer . . . can assure you that getting on board was the last thing I could begin to contemplate for at least three or four weeks and it was a good 8-10 weeks before I felt somewhat normal. Pelvis still "clicks" when I move a certain way.

Am surprised that your doctor didn't send you for x-rays . . . even though they can't treat it, they should be wanting to rule out other scary things like displaced femoral head, etc. which will require hospitalization and treatment.

Honestly, I would err on the side of caution and not ride for now - and perhaps take yourself off to A&E just to be on the safe side.

I aggree with PS be cautious ,
While the advice you have recieved may be fine I know personally that it's best not to trust to much I would have a goggle and see what you can find .
I would want an X-ray at least .
A few weeks doing nothing now is a small price to pay for a good recovery .
I was almost sent home from A&E with a potentialy catastrophic back fracture and spent twelve weeks flat on my back.
I only got an X-ray because an old nurse said to the doctor she's here we might as well X-ray while she's here.

Thanks all for your replies. I'm really hoping that as I felt up to asking the question of how long you had to wait before riding, combined with feeling confident enough to reducing the painkillers slightly today, is a very good sign that it's not as serious as that!!

It was only a warning from the doctor more than anything, but as I said in a reply in CR, I obviously want to avoid doing anything to cause a problem for my horse (and if I can avoid damaging myself further, so much the better LOL :D ). I think, which is what the doctor said, that it is just severe bruising and very sore muscles. But I will of course be taking it very carefully, and if in any doubt won't do anything to risk it.

Haha thanks :o I didn't exactly have this in mind when I chose my username!!

Oh my god, your poor poor YO!! Definitely nowhere near as bad as that, it's just a chance of slight damage, not a full break. She must be in absolute agony, not to mention extremely frustrated!

The doctor was rather vague, I just got told to see how it goes, and try to rest until it stops hurting *shrug* Didn't really expect much else to be honest, although I'd hoped for more, which is why I thought I'd consult those that have been through it themselves. Thank you for your response, I know me having had to ask probably sounds very stupid, but it was with the best of intentions!

If that's the case, I feel very relieved to be honest, as it sounds like I am nowhere near as badly off as you, I'm really sorry to hear that you were so badly injured. barring the clicking, are you now feeling better?

As above really, I did go to A&E, and it was they who said there wasn't much point in me having xrays. They did check me out for both neurological damage and internal damage to my organs etc, which came back negative.

I shan't be riding certainly for a few days, no matter how much I'm twitching from not getting my fix, but if I'm in any uncertainty as to my health, I will most definitely be leaving it longer.

Can you walk cos I couldn't when I cracked mine! Was on crutches for about 10 weeks and rode about a month after that. No after effects except can get a bit sore after a long hack.

Yes I can m1stify, although for the first 24 hours or so I was bent over and hobbling so much that I felt like Igor haha. I definitely don't feel like I should be on crutches or anything like that, so fingers crossed.

I can imagine you'd be sore after a long hack! Did you find it terribly difficult when you started riding again?

Really, no x ray? Think I'd want one!
How do they know how bad it is?
I've been sent home with an undiagnosed broken leg before :(
See your GP and they may refer you for X-ray, think it would be sensible in terms of knowing how long to rest for etc.

Had 3 months on crutches (totally non weight baring) when I fractured my pelvis. Had a further month walking before I was allowed back on a horse.

Hi i too fractured my pelvis and ruptured my bladder to boot!! I was about to back my then 3yr old and its the only time i ever questioned if i could ( i'm the wrong side of 40 ) however after 6 weeks i got back on and 18mths later horse is riding away nicely and i have no problems with my pelvis. It was very sore at the time but given the correct amount of time it came right.

Ps I wasn't in too much pain only took the time as oh insisted. I'd of been back on after about 2 wks. Lol c

I know someone who walked around for a few weeks with a broken pelvis and could not believe they had been fine but they were still experiencing low grade pain so came for an Xray ans discovered it was broken. So it is possible you could have broken it ans still be walking around but i still can't undratans why if they think it could be broken they would not Xray...its just not the done thing!
