I hate crank nose bands, but it seems that you can't get a nice raised ordinary cavesson these days, so I have to settle for a crank that is fastened loosely. Interested to see why retailers think that anyone who wants a dressage style bridle also wants a crank - are they really that popular?

No idea, but like you I dislike them. Mainly as people over tighten them, just because they can.
I prefer the flash noseband, myself. But, they seem to be harder to find if you don't possess them already!

Sabre cordoba give you the choice of crank /regular too.

It's quite difficult to find a regular noseband that comes wide /chunky enough, I ended up having Frances Kelly make mine

Dislike them too, don't like the action at all
(and they look so darn ugly too, why cover a horse's face with so much 'stuff'?)

If you are looking for a bridle with a cavesson, look for a showing bridle or hunter bridle, or perhaps get a noseband (or a whole bridle....) made especially for you by a saddler.

D'yon do lovely comfort bridles without cranks - you'd have to get the flash loop removed though. Cheapest is around £100 and it's lovely leather :).

I too hate cranks, but I hate the fact that finding any cavesson noseband is almost impossible more!

I have 3 normal cavasson nosebands.

1 is about 10 years old a Stuuben, quite thick but not bulky off the face.

1 is a Sabre Cordobra, one where the noseband attaches straight to the padded headpiece so no pressure point or hole in the headpiece. It is also quite chunky.

Last one is from Shadow Horse, lovely slim but butter soft padding, the noseband attaches straight to the head piece, beautiful cut away ears.

I had a really tough time finding something that wasn't either a crank or a flash. Chose the sabre in the end which is lovely.
Not sue why so many are flash or crank, especially in dressage. If fashion, it's strange.

I hate crank nosebands, they are so unweildy and clumsy on a horses face, i can never get them to sit how i want them. Just got an amazing bridle from ck equine with the perfect non crank patent cavesson noseband

Good to hear. They have some regally nice ones on the eBay shop but they were all crank in the pics but the seller said she did them as normal non crank as well. Must revisit to add to my list!

My pony Kate negus bridle came with one (without a flash) Doesn't bother me! It's in the trot up picture in my signature and IMO the thickness is fine too.

I don't understand hating most inanimate objects... It isn't the object doing the harm it's the person using that object... I have a few of them if they are fitted correctly they are just the same as a normal one.

I like them. I think they look nice on many horses and I find them easier to do up than ordinary ones. They are no good on a horse where the thickness of the padding pushes into the cheek teeth, though.

I like them. But then my last two horses have really suited the super wide style noseband with the padding. I do have a plain raised cavesson that came on my Collegiate bridle, but my boy does suit the wide crank on our dressage bridle more. It is left done up very loose - and in fact I leave it done up and his nose slips in and out of it every day!

Interesting - cannot stand Crank nosebands. In NZ we now can get, Bridles with a Flash, A plain Cavesson - Which I like, a drop noseband or a Grackle.

It really frustrates me though that you cannot buy nosebands individually. You have to buy the bridle.

Last week I called in at one of our local Saddleries - we are spoilt we have two selling high end saddlery, one that sells cheaper gear and a second hand shop. At the second hand shop was a brand new BEAUTIFUL brown dressage saddle and bridle - I told the girl to look the other way while I absconded with it! I now covet this saddle and bridle.

I get most irritated by the fact everything seems to come with a flash! Neither of mine need a flash - little horse used to have a drop when I was dressaging him but now he mainly jumps he's got a jaguar bridle that came with both crank or plain, he had the plain one but sharer has lost the screw that attached it so he may have to have crank loosely done up, and roo also has a crank with flash loop as that's what camp on his lovely jeffries IR bridle :( going at some point to get the flash loop taken off i think and it's never done up tight but would still rather it wasn't a crank really.

I bought my flash noseband individually (like I said neither of my bridles have flags attachments), and my saddlery as well as the online shops like Robinsons, Rideaway, Equestrian Clearance I noted at the time also sold noseband individually - especially drops, grackles and flashes.

Although, obviously, I'm not in NZ.

Can't really vote as nothing applies, I wouldn't know if raised non crank cavessons are easy to find as I tend to buy second hand (vintage, if possible). And I hate them, vile things that should be banned from BD if you ask me.

I'm indifferent really. The noseband is fine if it isn't tight, I detest flashes though. Nasty things. More important for me, is good quality leather and a well fitted bridle that isn't restrictive and doesn't rub. A bridle should be like a good riding hat or pair of boots, you forget you're wearing it.

My boy has one on his "comfort bridle". At the time it was the only one I could find with a pad at the back as everything rubs him under his chin. The irony isn't missed on me! I just fasten it loosely, it doesn't bother me particularly, although I'd never use it in the way it's intended.

I've got a crank on both of my pony's soft, padded comfort bridles and I just fasten it like a normal cavesson so I can get a couple of fingers under it. If they aren't cranked really tightly shut and fasted loosely then I don't see any problem. I would have had a normal cavesson but sadly comfort bridles with normal cavessons are hard to come by.

Thanks for the information - I do buy some stuff online from the UK when I can't get what I want here. Will remember that when I am looking for the next bridle

Cranks are the new flash. It was for many years that most bridles had a flash noseband, now many have cranks. You can buy cavessan nosebands reasonably easily. If you can't find one any good saddler could make you one.

My Comfort bridles (Albion KB or Elevator) have all got crank nosebands. I just don't over tighten them - although my trainer would prefer me to tighten them I like to be able to get two fingers under the noseband.

Interesting that the vast majority of people don't actually use them as a crank - where on earth did the fashion come from?!
Nice to know about the Albion ones - have just bought a comfort bridle and as others have said, I couldn't find one with an ordinary cavesson. I think the Albion ones might fit it though... will investigate further!
