Gaaaaaaaah what a week!
My little retriever had a thorn in her paw a couple of weeks ago, pulled it out, limped around a little and then carried on as normal. A couple of days later she wouldn't put any weight on it, a bit hot, worried me. I sort of convinced myself I might not have got the thorn out (even though I know it came out clean) and that it might have been blackthorn (even though I know it wasn't!). We went to the vet because she was quite obviously lame and I wasn't prepared to leave it.
They x rayed it and confirmed no thorn, gave her a week of NSAIDs. I had asked whether there was any alternative - she's got a really sensitive tummy and I had such a nightmare with oral anti inflams and one of our horses last year I'm just not a fan. Vet insisted oral form was best for her.
Came home and considered just box resting her and not bothering with the tablets. My OH reminded me that I am not a vet and that I should do what the vet says, which is an absolute valid point, so I gave her the onisor.
We've had runs, vomiting, hunger strike and on Sunday morning (I stopped the tablets as soon as the side effects started) she passed a large amount of mucus/blood/faces and I genuinely thought for a small while that I might lose her - the amount of crap that came our was unreal and she had dropped 3kg in a week.
She's now on canicur and metrobactin and *touching wood* over the last 24 hours she has been 110% better but I'm so mad I didn't just listen to my gut feeling in the first place.
She's on some intestinal food to mix with her biscuits for the time being so fingers and toes crossed her tummy settles down and she continues to eat. My friends have said I am neurotic as I've worked from home today so I can keep an eye on her. Am I? I never thought I'd be following my dog around watching her have a poo but after this weekend it's been the highlight of my day!!
