Crate in boot room or stable at night for puppy?

Hello. Yesterday I collected my first own dog. I grew up with dogs, but have never been able to get my own until now. He's a greyhound x collie lurcher, 5 months old, and seems like a complete sweetie.

I'm not sure where he should live though! He is the only dog (at the moment), and he will be a pet, so I feel he should be a house dog, and sleep in the house. However, I've had hound puppies for a few years, and they always live in the stables, and it feels odd having him in the house! To avoid the boot room being destroyed, I put him in a crate between 11pm and 6.30am last night, and he was ok. He cried a bit, but that is understandable and expected. And he's gone back in there today to snooze, so he's happy in there.

I feel that a comfy straw bed in a stable and a big secure yard would be better than being in a cage in the boot room. But obviously winter is coming and it will be too cold for him soon - it possibly is now. And my mum said that if I keep him in the stables she will come and rescue him!!

Where is the right place for him?

I would keep him in the boot room too, he's a house pet not a hound as NSN says.
My dog is two and still sleeps in the crate, would be ideal if he didn't need it but he loves to eat soft squishy things!

As suggested (in the house) crate train him by all means ready for him to beable to eventually be left without destruction and by pass any seperation issues in the house when he matures (obs leave him plenty to occupy him in the crate (filled kongs/ones/chews), but I would not perminantly leave him in a stable in a crate (all alone) unless im getting this wrong? is this whilst you are busy with the horses or to live in the stable perminantly?
I have always had lurchers too as pets inside (one lives out with a kennel mate) but only because I have so many dogs, she still comes inside all the time.

ok, thank you that is helpful. boot room it is! he is definitely a fair weather dog (and I need to get him a coat!) as he did NOT want to be outside today in the cold and rain! So is probably much happier inside in a confined space than outside with lots of space.

Cayla the crate wouldn't be in the stables, he'd just have a whole stable and yard to himself!
