Crate recommendations?

I'm thinking of replacing Loki's current bed with a crate. He doesn't really use his bed all that much, he prefers to squish himself in somewhere dark, such as under my bed. The problem is he's just a little too large to do that now, so he ends up with his head wedged under the bed or TV etc.... and the rest of his donkey-sized self splayed out across the room. I don't really mind but it can be annoying when he tries to wedge his shoulders in too. He really can't grasp the concept that he's grown rather a lot over the months and that when he gets himself really wedged somebody (me) has to do him the favour of lifting heavy furniture. He also doesn't understand that when I lift the heavy bed I do so because has gotten himself stuck and is making a fuss. I'm not doing it so that he can then take advantage of the newly created space in order to crawl further under the bed

Hence, vague plans are being formulated to replace his bed with a crate, throw a blanket over it, and declare it his very own den (that being the very quick version lol).

Can anyone give me any advice regarding different brands/stores to look at in terms of how robust the crates are etc? Whether it matters very much if the tray is metal or plastic?

Feel free to point out that I'm being odd, and should leave him alone to squash his face into whatever dark place he chooses :o

Thanks :) Took a look and they seem to be just what I had in mind. Do you use the 3-door one or the silver 2-door ones?

I have the biggest three door one, it's really useful to have the up-and-over door so a door isn't swinging out into the room space when you've got it open.

They also used to come with a strip of vetbed and a bolt-on water bowl included in the price, not sure they still do but an absolute bargain if so. :)

Went with your recommendation and it arrived today. It's huge!:D Going to require somewhat more material to make a proper cover for than I first thought heh. You were right about the up-and-over door, I hadn't thought about it before you mentioned it but seeing it erected and in place a swinging door would have been a real pain in the backside. Seems to have been a little bashed about during delivery but nothing a pair of pliers won't fix :)

Loki is most bemused at having all his bedding relocated to the new 'man cave'. :)

I am surprised that more don't have that style of door, where mine is it would be a huge pain to have a door swinging about into the middle of the living room!

We require pics of his giant new man cave. :D A double duvet cover is useful to cover it right up and I've recently given up on dog beds and have shoved a double duvet in there too. On cold days I'm tempted to get in there myself. :p

The duvet cover is a good idea, I'll have to have a shifty and see I've any spares. I've another 3 blankets on the way, but given the surface area they have to cover might try a duvet instead. He's fond enough of mine

He seems quite happy with his man cave. Took himself off for a snore session after his walk and was a little dwarfed in it when he was curled up :D But plenty of room to stretch out. Is it weird that I got inside it to see what it was like?

Anyways, the man cave!

ETS - He's mid roll in the top pic. He likes to roll over and chew things whilst upside down. Jury is still out as to why.

Not at all, I did the same! :D

When Dax first curled up in it I was all 'argh, it's massive, I could've gotten one half the size' but the longer she sleeps, the longer she stretches. :p

And of course, being a man he requires a capacious man cave to allow bizarre sleeping positions. :D

Good lord, I think thats even bigger than Evies. I wish hers had an up and over door, either Buffy or I are always banging into it, but it was £20 from a garage sale (great dane breeders selling up) so can't complain.
Just to compare sizes

Blackcob - Very good point! I spent a good hour with a tape measure ensuring that the 'giant' man cave would have enough room for the little donkey to sleep sprawled out. He likes to curl up for the serious power naps, but for general snoozing it's a case of legs everywhere.

Must admit, when I got in there myself I thought I'd be safe, as he was busy with a pig's ear. Daft plan. He just picked up the ear and joined me. I can happily testify that the man cave fits not only the man in question, but also a 5"2 woman-shaped person and a pig's ear.

MM- that's such a lovely photo! And for £20 quid I would put up with the intruding door also :D

Those are the crates I have what MM has, I could not remember who makes them though, and I get them cheap as chips, the XXL ones being the most I pay at £40 brand new.
He looks well cool in his new den:D

He does look pretty cool doesn't he? Of course, that is the donkey's normal look.... Honest.... He could give 007 a lesson in suave!. :p:D
