My OH and I are expecting our pup in just over a week (Border terrier) and we want to crate train her but when we have been looking at crates we have absolutely no idea what size we need!!

Can anyone help me out? also can anyone recommend places to get them? I have not crate trained before so dont even know the best places to find them!!

We dont mind buying either one she will fit in long term or buying a puppy sized one then a bigger one.

She already has a little bed to go in her crate and some small bowls, I really want to get this right and feel like a complete numpty!

I tried to pop my old border terrier into a crate in pets at home but he flat out refused!

Can someone help a complete div like me??

The smallest you can get away with, she will be dinky for a good while yet and will be swimming around in anything bigger than small, I would maybe try argos, they are cheaper than pets at home, but remember small, small, small:D all the spaniel puppy owners got the smallest they could get away with and they still have not out growm them, I doubt they ever will, they generally curl up in the bed not stretch out and it will be alot easier to toilet train with a small crate.

Ps, with puppies that dinky u can even start with a cat carrier and work your way up to a crate, u will be amazed at the space still left, but u need less space for now then gradually increase.
At this age cat carriers are handy for taking them on car journeys too, and if u wanted him in the bedroom for a little while to settle him in, he will not know the difference when placed in his more perminant place, carrier are jsut like mini crates but easier to move around:D
I have a 10 page puppy guide from when I sent the spangeys out if u think it may come in handy give me a shout:rolleyes::D

cayla - I love reading your posts - very helpful. i'd love a copy of your puppy guide if possible (i completely missed your offer of one on a previous post i started - my puppy was born last night - well the litter of 5 was) and i'm like an overexcited child! shall i PM you an email address?

The pup will be living at my parents house for the first few weeks untill all the paperwork goes through for our house so the crate will have to be small because my parents will whinge it takes up space!! I am scared I will get one too small and the poor pup will think im an evil mummy!! (I know... I'm soft)

I will have a look at argos now! I'm so excited to finally get my pup.. I just hope the old grumpy dogs dont decide she should be a snack!

I would recommend a Croft showman crate - £38 for a 24" single door one.

Much better and safer than the Argos ones as the mesh is closer and legs & jaws don't stick through.
I have some that must be 20 years old.

Agree with this, we had a cat carrier type crate to start with and being portable meant it was fantastic, for the reasons given above. It also makes it easy to get the puppy to have positive vibes about the crate, because it doesn't necessarily mean that going in the crate means being separated from the owner. I used to have my pup in her little carrier next to my chair whilst I was working on the computer. Once they learn to love the crate and are secure in it, then you can get them used to becoming more independent. So many puppies learn to hate the crate because owners only put them in there when they are going to be left!

I do have the solid metal ones too, but tend to find for puppies brought up in the argos crates from day 1 u never have any issues, I only use the more durable ones for staffs, or anything likely to kill the crate:D:D
Must say though I have never had any "stuck jaws or leg issues":D, my mam did though, with a staff and she had one of those ones u mention, the dog minced it and got it gob stuck....thats staffs for ya:rolleyes::D
I think my mam has had hers since 1900 o blonk and a few rosewood ones, they are pretty good too.

I do get ya though with the different quality crates.
