Ok, so we are 4 mths old now. We pretty much have the potty training sorted apart from one issue.

In the morning I come down and open the back door, then open the crate door, puppy goes outside and does her business.

Over the last two weeks she cannot contain herself and does the wee the second I start opening the crate door which is frustrating to say the least and washing every day.

So i have tried the following few methods -
Always letting her out last thing at night
Restricting the amount of water she gets at night
Coming down earlier in the morning than usual
Putting puppy pad in the crate (she just shreds this overnight instead)
Putting newspaper in the crate (read above:))

I can't tell her off as she will just associate every morning with a being told she is bad, any advice more than welcome, as I am stumped about this one..piccys of puppy for those with the answer to my woes x

So what time is the last wee at night? What time is 1st wee of the day?

4 months is still very young to expect her to be holding her bladder for many hours. How long before last wee visit does she have access to water?

I'm pleased you're not telling her off as it is asking a lot for her to understand at such a young age, and she will associate wetting with guilt.

Does she hear you opening the back door first and get all excited, so by the time you get to her she can't hold it? I'd try opening the crate first and then sprinting to the back door with her in tow. :)

You have my sympathies, Dax used to wander into her open crate for a pee and then sleep on the wooden floor instead.

Last wee is usually between 11pm-12, then first wee is around 7-8. I have tried getting up at 5 to let her out. But I think it may be something to do with seeing me in the morning she gets all excited and subsequently pees herself.

She has access to water up until about 10pm, its just she was doing so well, I think the more attached she has become to me the more exciting it is that I appear in the morning if you understand what I mean.

I shouldn't laugh but Dax seems to have her own brand of toilet etiquette there :)

Her crate is next to the back door, she usually starts getting excited when I get up in the morning, she hears me get out of bed, I get dressing gown on and when I'm coming downstairs you can hear the howls and yelps in the kitchen (like come on mum!)

And whilst I'm undoing the crate door she pees, so regardless of which door first its the minute I reach the crate door which takes 5 secs to undo

Can someone else let her out in the morning to tone down the excitment?

Can you move the crate closer to the door and find some way of opening it faster?

She is very young and it sounds like excitment so it will get better with time!

Having declared to OH that crates are perfect for house training and no dog wants to soil where it sleeps, Dizzy proved me a liar by pooping in his crate one night 1 as a puppy! No amount of changing his eating habits or letting him out more often changed this urge until he was a bit older. Until then we got a poop every night (nice!). We became quite proficient at cleaning poop half asleep!

LOL@Dax!

You need and automatic catch that releases her:D

Try this
Have a treat ready i.e before you hit the kitchen, and no touch or eye contact jsut drop the treat in the crate (use something super tasty) so she will avert her attention to A, looking to see what you have dropped and B, sniffing it out to goble it:rolleyes: this in turn should take her attention away from the excitement of you opening the door which in turn gives you time to open the door and head straight for the back door:D

So basically it is an attention averter to get her past that exciting moment, and obs remember each and every time to re enter the house or room when she is in there,no talk or eye contact, potter around and release her after a few mins and only give attention once she is back in from the garden.

Can someone else let her out in the morning to tone down the excitment? I'm afraid its just my own until I find prince charming that is :)

Can you move the crate closer to the door and find some way of opening it faster? The crate is literally next to the door, I need some kind of automatic door to just click open, the two latches just take too long i.e 3 seconds!

Cayla I'll give your method a try tomorrow morning. I never speak to her until she has done her business just to keep the excitment minimal!!

This is what I was going to suggest.

OK you will have a few more wee incidents for now bt hopefully in the long run!...

When you come down & go into her room ignore her until she is settled down again & quite. Then go let her out. So she knows she only gets let out when calm.

I know the fustrations! My old dog use to wee when ever she met anyone. Or when ever I came back in or got back in the car!
Very annoying but we (no pun intended!) just ignored her & she did grow out of it.

I am new to all this crate training exactely 3 days into it in fact with an 8 week old pup! Luckilyafter the first day she so far seems to be really good touch wood!

Good look.
Patience & time is the key! Though our santy may suffer but worth it!
