As post title, he will now pretty happily be crated for short periods of time (thanks for the info cayla) but when I let him out he is super clingy, wanting hugs following me everywhere etc, so does anyone have any suggestions to help him be less clingy to his human?

Don't pay him any attention when he's clingy - he will realise that he can be ok without you, but you need to make sure you don't feed the behaviour by giving him unending attention when he's out of the crate. Obviously don't blank him 24/7 either, but make sure his clinginess is not being rewarded. If he's jumping on you etc, turn your back on him or leave the room. Make sure the time spent in the crate is really short - a few minutes is fine to start with, so he doesn't get all wound up.

Also, have you been leaving him with yummy chews and kongs in the crate, to make it an extra-good place to be?

Yes I have been leaving him with munchies, he doesn't jump up or stuff like that, he is just following me getting under my feet or wanting to be by/on me on the sofa which can be a huge pain
I can't really leave the room as its open plan and it would mean re crating him IYSWIM
He happily goes in the crate and 99% of the time will stay happy quiet etc occassionally he will have a tantrum at being in there
I followed caylas advice to the letter so he has been built up slowly etc

I have this problem too!! I just ignore her :)I don't let her follow me upstairs or into the kitchen, Lola's getting better, she knows to stay away when we're eating, dressing/changing the baby etc :) dont give up!! :) and dont always stroke her when shes on the sofa .. thats where i was going wrong!
