With the recent posts on prices of nags can I get your thoughts - what would you pay for a safe hack - nothing fantastic and never going to be anything but a safe hack, easy to do etc

Just wondering!

£1200 or around that much, that would be for a 14.2. Obviously a bit more for something with more hieght and maybe a little less for something smaller. I dont understand people that pay tonnes of money for something with no show experience and no clear potential. These days you can pick up a 14hh forester just broken for £700.

depending on age £1500 tops. ideally a grand if it looked nice.

i got my heinz 57 for 500 included tack/rugs - mind you she is 13 and only 13.1!
but low and behold has turned out to be whole atleast double maybe more if i worked harder on her.

i dont believe in paying thousands and thousands for horses - maybe becuase ive never had and prob never will have that sort of money to spend

well, I'm just starting to look at prices for this type of horse. Granted, i'm only looking at 13.2- 15.2hh's but just want something that's a safe hack, a real plodder.

I am shocked at the prices. Yes, they're in demand because they're suitable for novices etc, but I wouldnt pay some of the prices out there.

TBH I'm looking at 2k max. And for that I want it sane, sound and easy to do in most ways. I don't mind quirks so long as it's safe..

when i took my chap on, hed been vegetating for some years in a variety of fields/livery yards and had grown into a hippy. Altho i only have him on long-term full loan he is insured for £1750 as 13 years, 16.1 IDx who does everything! I certainly wouldn't have paid that for him 8 months ago tho! Would have been under £1k if i had to open the purse.

There are a few hidden treasures out there, you just need to look and let people keep their ears open too.
Good luck.

I would pay £3-4k, if it is safe on the road etc and you can enjoy it - worth the money. I would rather pay a bit more and not have any hassle

Realistically you'd be lucky to find a safe hack for less than £3500. They are in demand.

I disagree, in my area, it seems to be quite easy to pick up something suitable. I could get something thats hacking safely for under £1000 tomoro if i wanted another one. There is a mare at my yard that is a safe hack, lazy as hell but still VERY safe that the owner would want about £600 for and theres a breeder that has a handful of broken horses that she would sell for £800 or so each that are all nice, safe horses. They all would need work if you wanted to do more with them but if all you want to do is hack then you shouldnt be paying much

bloody hell , prices for the uk market is madness ... 3500 for a happy hacker ???

Have found several horses far far FAR less than that and have turned out to be spot on . I paid 2k for my last mare and she was an exceptional little horse, brilliant to hack out, would go through busy towns and crossed dual carriages ways ( when in livery)

The horse before that was a 15hh 10 yr old gelding, paid 1500 for him and he would have hacked forever and went passed anything and yet he could jump too .. that was with tack also .

How does this sound? 14.3hh General all rounder, safe in traffic, excellent jumper, shod, loading, clipped, great for hacking, forest rides, beach rides, great character, passported, wormed, full set of quality tack and rugs, not novice ride as he gets fizzy when jumping but will jump literally anything! So for a competant rider hes easy.Change of circumstance means this fantastic pony is available to a good permanant home £1995 inclusive

That horse isn't a safe happy hacker - needs a competent rider - and that is why it is cheap

Its says not novice ride as gets fizzy when jumping, its worth contacting as may be fine if she doesnt want to jump which she doesnt!

Anyway, how about this one

15.3hh tb x cheasnut mare rising 15 years old 100% to shoe, box, stable, traffic, catch ect done abit of everything at rc level loves hacking and hunting safe fun forward going ride, fully vaccinated, passported , microchipped, wormed to date , priced to sell due to lack of time 1300 please ring or email please no novices or nervous riders she is very safe but is still tb

I realise it says no novices but if your client can ride well but just wants to hack then it sounds fine as the ad states the animal is 'very safe'

Find an advert without No novices written on it or needs competent rider - thats what you pay the money for. They are out there cheaper but you have to make compromises.

Well thats what my client is looking for atm and she cant find anything full stop, yet alone anything under £3500!! We're in hampshire so if anyone knows anything then please pray tell...

Any of these coming up trumps? Can send you the website if you like any of them

Or this

15hh Exmoor cross 19 years young gelding. Fully passported, microchipped and vaccinated. A really genuine safe ride you won't get a more laid back and quiet hack out!For sale due to family commitments. Price inc. all tack and rugs. £1500 o.n.o

Why don't you try an ex riding school type for a safe hack!

We paid £1900 for a real safe coloured 15.2 cob last year with some tack - true armchair ride - safe as houses - easy to do, good with vet etc. My mum rides him, I can ride and lead and he can pop a small fence (although not the greatest style)

Was just wondering what people would be prepared to pay for his sort?

it really does depend on age, size, type etc. £1500 seems a lot for a 19yr old and having looked at prices recently for a friend, I'm not in the least surprised you're client has had problems K_and_R!

I think if an advert says not novie ride, needs competent rider, or often even simply 'forward going' it is unlikely to be what is being looked for

This one isnt, if she doesnt mind something with some age then he could be perfect!
