Evening all,

What action would you take If your horse suddenly started making a 'creaking' noise from its hind quarters? Horse is 17 in light/ moderate work and never displayed any signs of illness.

Call the vet, explain over the phone and
follow their advice. You don't say how old the horse is or if it is sound, so I would just have a casual chat with my vet. X

Some geldings' sheaths make a kind of squeaking noise when trotting. Something to do with an air pocket left behind in their abdomen from the gelding op (don't remember exactly - maybe someone can explain better than me? It was years ago I asked my vet about it). Anyway, if it is that, it's normal for the horse and nothing to worry about. It can suddenly start happening when the horse changes weight or fitness.

If you're worried though you should talk to your vet - wouldn't want to dissuade someone from doing that :)

GG like I said, horse is 17 & in light to medium work (sound) .....and she's a mare btw! :)

Sorry...didn't make the connection. I read it as 17hh, lol.

I would think if she is sound, it is nothing to really worry about. 17 is an age that she could be starting to get a bit creaky but I wouldn't automatically worry about it. I used to ride a 33yr old that clicked with every stride but was sound as a pound.

Only reason I mentioned calling your vet was just have an informal chat. They can note it and check her over when she next has her jabs. It's easy to forget sometimes that calling your vet doesn't have to mean calling them out...it can also mean just a casual chat. I trust my vet implicitly and he will talk through anything with me but very rarely makes a visit.

Have you thought about putting her on a feed to support older horses. Not saying 17 is old at all, but the extra help might benefit her.

I'm no expert, but I would guess it's just one of those things that comes with age! Good idea to 'phone the vet for a chat, just to check that it's nothing to worry about.

H has a 'clicky hip'! He clicks with every stride - and so do I!! What a pair!

(He's a lot more sound than me, though ;) )

Lol thanks GG :)

I have considered a supplement but its tricky as she's currently loving out for summer & gets no feed. I will see how she is today & ring the vet if I'm still worried. Was just a bit worried as we have been doing more jumping lately. She will happily jump round a metre course (would go higher but her mother is a wimp lol ;)) & she is a horse who loves to jump. In sure it's nothing. As you say she is a lady of a certain age after all!

I'm pretty sure you can get mineral licks targeted to older horses, flexibility etc.

Just listen to her...if she is staying sound, don't worry too much.

You could try not jumping for a few weeks and see if the noise goes away?
