Cream for itchy labrador

My labrador has an issue with an itchy chin, she scratches it and rubs it on the floor quite a bit so that he now has grey hairs - not that there are many hairs left! Spoke to the vet and they say it is something in the grass that is irritating her rather than a mite or something. So is there any cream that I can safely put on there that could help? I would rather go natural with this than use something from the vets. Thanks
 
Hi lochpearl, I have a collie cross lab, he is also sensitive to pollen and gets pink itchy skin under his front legs and on his tummy. If it gets bad I get tablets from the vet but I did find some cream, Johnsons Tea Tree skin cream at our pet shop, which soothes and calms itchy skin, which I use if its just a mild reaction. I have found this helps and takes the redness down quite quickly. I also find regularly splashing the itchy patches with cool water after the dog has been on the grass really helps.
 
Thanks for the advice, I will try and get some. I do wonder if there is also something that can help with the hair regrowth too?
 
Hi I'm not sure about the hair regrowth because with my dog it has mainly affected the balder parts of him. Hopefully if you manage to get the itching under control the skin will become healthier and the hair will probably come back naturally.
 
You can use Dermagel on animals other than horses I noticed when I read the bottle, don't know if that would be any good and it promotes hair regrowth, its about a 10 er, white with red writing on

You could try sulphur tablets (natural health counter at chemists/health shops), they helped a straw allergic Border Terrier we had. You can also get rock sulphur from a pet shop and put it in their water bowl.
 
Hello Lochpearl,

I have had the same problem with one of my cats from long grass and he was given steroid injections to stop him making him self sore from constantly licking as he was so itchy under his tummy and bald because of it poor thing:(

I wasn't happy doing that so I bought Camrosa Oitment, which seems to have really helped thank goodness and no more sores have appeared so far and there is a little hair re growth (first bit for a very long time).

Camrosa is very good, but not knowing what is causing the problem only means using a cream is only offering relief from itching, rather than getting to the bottom of the problem and curing it
 
Gosh, thanks for all the responses, Samantha, the skin is mostly black still, and as rough as sandpaper, I think she always has the itchiness a little but it is worse in the warmer months as she also chews at her feet - never drawing blood though. This is why we thought that it was some sort of harvest mite or something. We have a new vet now so I might ask them to have a look at it again.

I was thinking about camrosa too as I have some for the horse but I do think I should have her looked at again just in case something was missed before.

I agree SamanthaG, I tried it as the vet didn't know what it was from so gave him steroids. He tends to spend a few days roaming the fields at a time so thought I would try Camrosa as a more natural treatment and it seems to have worked so far. If it comes back I will get some tests done at the vets but fingers crossed he maybe ok now :)
 
Aloe Vera? I use it for EVERYTHING!! :D

ETA - not a cream or any form of shop ***** - i have the plants - snap off a stem and rub on the jelly from the actual plant - MAGIC stuff
 
It might be zinc deficiency. I say that as it usually causes lesions around the mouth (that are itchy) and dogs with it often chew feet. It's quite common in arctic breeds, one of mine has it but I have read somewhere that labs can get it. Either way it might be worth trying a zinc supplement such as this http://www.snowpawstore.com/nutrazinc-8oz.html and /or a general skin supplement like this http://www.doghealth.co.uk/collections/health-supplements/products/restore and I would also highly recommend camrosa. My one gets it really badly and chews herself - the camrosa is the only thing that helps topically. I give mine both of those supplements all year and it really helps.

Oh, the article mentions diet a lot. We tried raw for 6 months and it didn't help but I believe in most cases it does. We have however recently switched to Salmon based food as a trial over the Summer.
 
Try Global herbs itch cream or I think it is called Dermanol cream, global herbs too, it says its for horses but I use it with great success with itchy dogs even ones with bad excema.I have used loads of their products and find them brilliant on horses and dogs.
