I have two lovely shiny new bits waiting to be tried out on Murphy: a Pelham and a Kimblewick.

I've not used them so far because I want a curb guard for the chain, but I'm really keen to give the Pelham a try. I don't want to order one off the internet as the postage will cost more than the curb guard itself, and I don't want to go to the tack shop for it because it's a 15 min drive and I'll be tempted to buy other things and have NO money

Could I make my own? Perhaps by wrapping the curb chain in something? Any creative ideas out there?

Or am I just going to have to go to the tack shop and try to find the willpower not to buy a rug/a bridle/more bits/treats/lotions & potions etc???

Vet wrap! You can colour co-ordinate then! It won't be permanent and doesn't leave your chain sticky, can you tell I've done this before?

Same as Enfys or have you an old neoprene boot you can cut up? Make a strip nearly twice as wide as the chain but also just a bit shorter. Cut out two holes near each end and thread the chain through. Make sure it is easily shorter so that it doesn't wrinkle up when fastened. You could also use a bike's inner tyre and then you'd only need it a bit shorter than the chain.

wrap it in vetrap bandaging tape. easy.
remember to change it for a real guard before you go BE eventing and get it rejected by the tack steward 3 mins before your test though, as happened to my friend at the weekend at Gatcombe...

I used to use my baby's sock with the end cut out - just poke it through....(remove baby from sock first!) From the look of your signature though, you may not be old enough to have access to this option...?

Hornby, useful things babysocks aren't they? Also make very good buckle guards whe washing girths!

Sorry to hijack.
