we have a problem with creeping buttercup in our fields which are ridge and furrow. we top the fields or they are grazed down so few flowers but thr rosettes are hard to get rid of as they spread at ground level. i can dig some out but does anyone have advice. i prefer not to use chemicals but if i do which are best and safest and how long should i keep horses off thanks

I'd be interested in this as we have a buttercup problem developing too

I have it too and have been using product called Grazon 90, which was recommended by a friend, you have to keep neddies off for at least 7 days after sprayed, but what i do is spray a small section then fence it off and do a bit at a time, but it is good stuff and does get rid of it. I got it from my local feed merchant and it was £48 for the bottle, but you have to dilute it and it lasts ages.
hope this helps

Hi Kate, we've just used this stuff last week to tackle the dock leaves in our field (YO just tops them!) and they are dying very well now

going to treat the other bit of field next weekend as am rotating horses and treating bits they are not on.
Quick question, do you leave the dead plants on the field or remove them?

thanks Kate, that could take a while then

as there are loads which is why we treated them.
Don't think we've got a problem with the rain as it is peeing it down as I type

Does it really kill the buttercups as well as only sprayed the docks so far? The parts of the field that have no or few docks have suddenly sprouted loads of buttercups!

Well I have done my buttercup a couple of times now and it has only just started to go yellow and die, so it does eventually work but it takes time, but i know what you mean, i hate the bl**dy stuff! argh, just keep persivering.
Good luck

thanks for that KAte

just between docks and buttercup the grass is slowly vanishing

and as YO does nothing despite promising all last year to get it sorted we decided this year to do something ourselves. Cheers xx

Sheep and geese are the only natural methods of controlling buttercups. Although if you fertilized heavily and keeping horses & cows off the ground that would help!

Grazon 90 is not really designed for creeping buttercup control, you might be better off using something like Headland Polo which controls both creeping and meadow buttercup with one application (but not bulbous)

Thanks CSJ, just feel like we're fighting a losing battle to keep what grass we have. We've only got just under 2 acres for mine and sis so try to do the best with what we've got. The other fields on yard are terrible, dock leaf city at the top and buttercup heaven at the bottom - all 16 acres

shame really as grass is very good. Have spent a fortune this year on grass seed, fetiliser and this Grazon stuff. How expensive is this Headland Polo and how long do you need to keep the horses off after being treated?

Not sure how much it costs, I will speak nicely to a farmer and see if he can get it from a buying group

The website is:
http://www.headland-ag.co.uk/

The big PDF on it says keep livestock off for 2 weeks, or longer if ragwort is present (buttercups are denatured when killed, but ragwort is still poisonous)

They are everywhere!! This year seems the worse. The horses dont eat them, and we top the fields and spray, but they still come back. Am at a loss what to do next.

They are both broad leaved weedkillers designed to not kill grass. However if spraying with a knapsack if you overdose you can scorch the grass (chemically burn it).
