My mare has started creeping forwards when asked to stand (when ridden), can anyone suggest why she may be doing this?

She understands what I am asking her to do, but she sets her neck against me and just creeps forward very very slowly.

It's really frustrating! Why is she doing this??

I know what to do more from the ground than when ridden.... but whilst I don't know why she does it I would try the following...

Groundwork in a pressure halter, ask your mare to move backwards then ask her to stand in her space, should she creep forward push her back and just wait for her to stand still for an age. If she wriggles just shake the rope to tell her that is inappropriate and all you want is for her to stand.
If this behaviour is established from the ground then have her ridden with the pressure halter and you (or helper) walking alongside. Ask her to stop every 20m or so ... if she creeps reinforce the ground work.
Or if she creeps (which I guess is a type of napping) turn her round in a tight circle til she sighs (realises what she is doing doesn't work) and ask her to stand. Walk on and then ask her to stand ... each time she creeps turn her round 3 times and as for the halt.
She will soon realise that if she creeps you make her work far harder than she intended and will decide the easier option is to stand.

Good luck and let us know the outcome.

Does she do it in the school, out hacking? Any other ridden changes or just this? How long have you had her?

It could be just her taking the mick, Does she know Rein back? I used to have a huge problem with my mare and one junction we use often. She just wouldn't stand, It became dangerous as she would just try to creep forward into the road without my asking her too. Its a junction close to my yard so I took her out in hand a few times, every time she creeped forward I made her back up atleast 4 steps. If she stood and waiting nicely I praised her off I went. She soon realised if she creep forward I was going to make her keep backing up.

We have no problems anymore and she will wait all day if I asked her too ;)

She does it in the school but not out hacking. No other changes, just this!

Rein back is a great idea, thank you I will give that a go.

Hi,

I would probably start by doing a halt and then as soon as she halts, reinforce the word "stand" then really praise and move on.
After a few times of literally standing for one second, praising and moving forward, increase the amount of time you are standing still. Just adding a second at a time.
I'd probably do this half a dozen times per session and then leave it alone. Your frustration is probably adding to the reason she won't stand still.
I wouldn't make it a battle, just reinforce what you want by praise when she does the right thing, and ignoring, moving forward and trying again but only for a brief moment to start with.
Somebody more qualified to answer will probably answer you soon too but this is just what I'd try.

It does sound like she is pushing her luck ;) once she realises that not stopping= more work, she will be quick to stand the next time you ask!

Keep an eye out for any other ridden changes though, then I would be thinking along the lines of teeth, saddle :)
