creosote help please?

ive got the real stuff - not creocote or a substitite. I have a cribber and a windsucker - how long should i kick them out of the stables for and how long does it take to try? only planning on doing the outside.

The smell lingers for ever, but when i do mine, and thats with creocote, not the proper stuff, I only do it when I know the weather is good enough for them to be left out for at least 14 days.
It dries fairly quickly in the warmer weather, but the smell is enough to choke on for weeks!
 
both love the taste of cribbox and the naf stuff and the dung in a water bottle doesnt work for long. its not to stop them chewing its to treat the stables as a whole.
 
We did our with creosote last autumn. It took quite a long while to dry, towards a week in some bits. Its worth the wait though, its been far, far better than the creocote we've used for the last few years. We may not even have to redo it this year. Its very dark though!
 
I've been trying stuff to stop tail/mane chewing and obviously I can't use creosote (though I may be reduced to that yet!). Cribox doesn't seem to be very effective for the price.

So I've been Googling. A cheap substitute seems to be white vinegar and lemon juice. I forget the proportions but I think it was 2 of vinegar and 1 of lemon juice. You might try including some paprika. Ideally, I'd like to make this up into a paste, maybe mix it up with something like cold cream?

Definitely a subject deserving more research!
 
be careful with lemon juice on mane and tails as mixed with sunshine it will bleach the colour out ok on a blond but not so helpful on one with a dark mane and tail it will also dry so I would mix with a cheap and cheerful hair conditioner but patch test first
 
At least a week for the fumes to calm down and personally I wouldn't do any places they could chew- it's banned fora reason, it's very strong stuff and not something you want them eating.
 
You can get it from some old fashioned small wood yards but it's not legal to sell so it's you really need to know someone.
You also should never use it if you any paid staff around it's banned for good reasons .
If you know a fencer ask as he may know where locally they still have a creosote dip for timber.
 
I wouldn't use anything else, nothing's as good. For boxes, I'd wait until they're out but once it's dry it should be ok, it's the smell that puts them off it more than the taste. I do our rails while they're in the field, never had a problem, they smell the bucket and walk away!
