cresty pony, need help please

thankfully moving fizz back to old yard where she was like this

even though shes been on restricted grazing all summer she looks like this

she will be on hard standing with some hay during the day, in at night & her feed will be a handful of safe & sound for her supps & piriton to go in.

how can i get rid of this huge crest

You are doing the right thing by restricting food intake, if you can introduce more exercise that would be a good thing too. It will work, it just takes time and it is better if you can do it slowly

thanks, when we move she can be ridden by my girls, not really possible at current yard, i can also long rein or lunge during the day which i can not do now.

I'd soak the hay to get the carbs out, but still leave her with plenty of fibre to chew on. I'd give it to her in small portions throughout the day if it is possible. If you don't want to soak then consider giving something like Hi FI Lite as a hay replacer. And as much exercise as you can give her, even if it is walking in hand. How old is she and has she ever had laminitis before?

she gets soaked hay as she coughs anyway, will be small & often as the 2 big horses will have 3 feeds per day.

never had laminitus, she is 13 this march.

she will be doing something every day from the second we move as i will have the time to do it.
infact she has never ever been this size before in the 6 years i have had her

. I've had to up his feed because he's dropping too much weight...and yet his crest is still as big as ever

her whole line are cresty apparently

been told to wrap her neck but i do not like the odds of making it out alive tbh

coxydean have sacks of cal mag which is supposed to work too.

wrapping a neck, with great difficulty i think, something to do with a Lycra hood on 24/7 to sweat it off , or something like that, i quickly switched off when i realized it would involve teeth & hoofs

Another one with a cresty beast

I look so stupid having a ribby horse with a huge neck.
But this week it seems to be slowly going down not much but slightly.
We changed her feeding and she's now come in from living out 24/7.
She's getting Happy Hoof and a scoop of Slim and Healthy, some haylage at night and only one feed.
She's now on poorer grazing and there's been some improvement (her weight has also come down from 490kg a few weeks ago to just about at 470kg tonight!)
I've never heard of MagOx, anyone wish to enlighten me on it?
Glad to see I'm not the only one with a cresty po at this time of year (Noticing lots of scottish people with this problem

must be in the air!)

Magnesium oxide.....it comes in a fine powder form....plays a big part in helping a horse's metabolism, which if it isn't working properly results in the changes that cause cresty necks and even laminitis. It's also the main ingredient in a lot of calmers, it's really good for settling spooky horses.

The dose is roughly 10ml (2 level teaspoons) per day added to feed. Hope this helps!

My lad has a bit of a crest too and even when he looses weight and is looking slim, the crest is still there. The vet told me that it won't go because you can't really exercise a neck as such to shift the fat that is stored there. She said that you just need to keep checking it to make sure it does not get hard as that is an indication of possible lami - it should have some give in it when squeezed apparently.

This is the best time of year to gently get some weight off them and then keep the regime going. You want to be able to see the shadow of their ribs. Soak the hay for at least one to two hours to remove the nutrition.

Oliver is quite cresty, but not fat anywhere else. Strangely though, he doesn't look cresty when his mohican of a mane is plaited down.

I'd never heard of Mag-Ox either, but it's certainly something to keep in mind for the future.
