Hello All!
I am a research post-graduate at the University of Southampton, and would love to hear from anyone who has a crib-biter/windsucker that they would be willing to let me study in an experiment I am currently running. Essentially, this will involve my coming to you, and setting up a circular maze (in an arena, or similar). The horse will be released in the maze a number of times, and will have to learn to locate a small food reward. That's it! It will take about 2-hours of your time.
If you are interested, please contact me on
matthew.parker@soton.ac.uk
THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!!

Oh, you're at my university, what degree are you doing?!
Two people at my yard in Winchester have windsuckers, PM me your number and I'll pass it on to them.
Whats the theory behind this experiment?

did Matt's last maze test with my cribber and a control horse
Interesting and I'm going to do this test as well with the same two horses

If you do have an arena, a cribber and a non-cribbing control horse and can help Matt out then do - it's quite fun and the horses definitely don't get stressed or upset and in fact seemed to quite enjoy themselves (esp. my greedier one )

Hiya Matt, I have 2 horses and 1 pony that you can experiment on if you want my mare is a cribber she chews anything grrrrrr but you can compare her to the other 2 if you want I dont have an arena though but we have a 9 acre field PM me if you are interested.

Sounds intriguing. I have a pony that has cribbed for the last 18 years. Are you able to say what the purpose of the research is? I promise I won't spoil the test by telling my mare!

Hiya, and thanks for your interest! Essentially, there is well established evidence that crib-biters have differences in the way that their brains are wired up. The reasons for this are various, and include genetics and factors associated with the horse's early development. These changes are so specific, that they allow us to make predictions about how the affected animals will respond in a series of behavioural tests. The one I am running at the moment will assess one of these predictions. If you are interested, let me know, and we can try to arrange a meeting!
Thanks
matt

Yep sounds interesting. I do occasionally try things to make her stop, but have had limited sucess, so could be interesting. How should I make contact?

I did Matt's test with my two in the Summer and it was a very interesting morning. I would really encourage people to take part if they can
