The elderly idiot is actually settling a bit more now which is brilliant. He's asking to come in a bit during the day and spends much of it lying down chilling so is fairly relaxed.
He windsucks, this I was told before buying.
The previous owner used a collar which I've never done (my other horse also windsucks)
My stable is designed to accommodate windsucking as I gave my old horse "windsuck stations!"
This allowed him places and avoided ruining everything!
New horse has apparently worn the collar no problem for years and years. He is calm and happy and munches on his hay with it on and won't even try to grab anything. He seems happier tbh wearing it. If it's not on he leaves his hay and feed sometimes.
I'm just a bit uncomfortable with them?

sorry I hate them.. management needs looking at first, feed plenty of fibre and give as much turnout as possible... and then find out whether there is a physical reason...my mare used to crib quite a lot and she was diagnosed with cushings in 2011. since being on prascend she stopped. I know if her acth levels have increased she begins to crib again, once dose has been increased she stops...im not saying this is relevant to all horses but its worth investigating everything.. some people say that colic is caused by cribbing/windsucking but I would take the chance of that rather than use a collar....

The thing is he gets plenty of fibre if he wears the collar. I give ad-lib hay which go's untouched if I leave him without it on. If its on (like today just to confirm my theory!) He eats loads and seems happier for it.
I've put him on an ulcer supplement to see if there is any difference at all but so far nothing.

I have two livery horses here who both wind suck - neither owner wants a collar so they just wind suck away.

You are working with the horse you can see it if your experience is that he's calmer and eating more fibre in the collar then I don't think there's any issue with using it.
You have to be led by what the horse in front of you is telling you not by some ideal you have .

I've had my mare about a year. I knew she cribbed when I got her, but wasnt aware of the extent. She lives at 24/7 with adlib hay, but spent the vast majority of time cribbing anywhere she could. I was determined not to prvent her, however the equie dentist came out and showed me the state of her teeth- she's only 6 and has the teeth a very elderly pony would be proud of from all the cribbing, so I brought a collar.

I'm amazed at the results- she wears it pretty much 24/7 out in field and seems so much happier- I have seen her try to crib once or twice but she gave up very quickly and went straight to eating. The not being able to crib thng didnt seem to bother her at all- think it was a habit.

She has put loads of weight on and is no longer ribby, and she seems far more settled and happier in herself. So it may be worth a try and see what happens? Im certainly glad I did.

I've got a 6 yr old windsucker who got the habit in a previous home when kept short of any feed. Its certainly a habit with him, although if kept away from solid surfaces, he doesn't do it. Is everybody talking about the collar with the metal piece or the miracle collars? I tried one of those on an habitual cribber/windsucker, and it stressed her out enormously.
