My horse cribs badly when eating. He always has, we are currently treating him for ulcers. When he is in his stall it’s impossible to avoid because of the small space, but when I feed him hay out in the pasture I was putting it on the fence line next to his water, but with the fence being there he was cribbing constantly when eating. I’ve moved the hay 20-30 ft off the the fence line and it seems to help, but he still walks back and forth to crib on the fence in between bites. It’s definitely better than where it was before because he would crib after every bite pretty much and now off the fence it’s like every 5 minutes maybe. I don’t know if I’m stressing him out by keeping it further from the fence and he has to walk back and forth or if keeping the hay on the fence line is encouraging unhealthy behaviors? He doesn’t really seem stressed out either way and he doesn’t really seem to completely stop the cribbing either, although it’s better. I also thought having it off the fence line would give him more room to face whichever direction he wants when eating. I’m trying to work on getting him to feel less anxious, I’m wondering is it better where I had it before on the fence line or off the fence line or does it even matter?
