Well that's it really! Does anyone compete BE or hunter trials with just front shoes on and none behind. My mare needs to have front shoes on but I am reluctant to put back ones on as she's been without for over a year. Also if you do, do you stud in front.

TIA x

I do BE totally barefoot, generally do until I feel they need to be shod (then normally I do all round) but can easily do up to PN barefoot. Probably wouldnt go novice without being shod and studded though. Only your horse will tell you if its confident enough with just fronts. I personally wouldnt stud in front as I was always taught behind is where the motor is so this is where you'd stud first.

All of my ponies went XC bare foot and never had a problem.
However, my mare is shod all round with two studs in each foot as I prefer them for the level I compete at.
I would stud up the front. I would hate to be having a great round only to have a slip and worst case scenario fall off or put the horse off. I find they just give you that bit more confidence.
But it is all down to personal preference, some horses manage brilliantly with no studs, others are so uncoordinated that I wouldn't dream of doing on grass without them!
