Cross-over surcingles, help needed

A new lightweight combo turnout is needed and after lengthy deliberations I have narrowed it to 2.

1...has buckle front fastenings and neck fastenings NOT OK
normal cross over surcingles OK
2... has clip front fastenings and velcro neck fastenings OK
slot in cross surcingles NOT OK

My fields are on a steepish slope and I know the horses slide when rolling. This might rip the slots.

So my question dear HHO is.. Will rug 2 be OK to use with the surcingles outside the slots? Has anyone done this?

I think I'm being dense, but I don't really undestand the parametres of the question... Maybe I need to sleep and re-read in the morning.

Do you mean when the rug has little slits in the side for the belly straps, rather than the belly straps 'hugging' the rug to the belly??

I'd be more concerned about leg straps personally - hate them with a passion!

I agree about leg straps. I use fillet straps.

Sorry I reread the post and I have made it confusing.
I don’t like buckles. It’s just a ‘thing’!
It was to differentiate between the rugs.

I can't see how it would make a difference if you didn't use the little slits? I always take the leg straps off too and replace with a fillet string

I hoped that would be alright but I asked as in the pictures of rugs the slot ones looked deeper in the girth. I wondered if it would rub behind the front legs and/ or in front of the hind.
I wondered if anyone had used a rug that way.

I've got a rug with them and mostly don't bother. If the rug fits well enough it isn't a problem. I suppose it would keep the body of the rug closer to the belly if it was really windy or something.

I don’t use the slots either although I have rugs with them. They’ve never rubbed although I’m not sure how they’d be near the hind legs anyway.

I guess the idea of the slots is so that when it rains the water runs down the rug and falls away from the horse rather than under its belly?

Yes I think that is the idea.

I was asking as my horses often slide when rolling on the hill. I thought perhaps the rug would ride up and, as well as getting mud inside, it would rip the slits. In that case it is easier not to use the slits but I wasn’t sure whether this would work.

I'd go for 2 and just ignore the slots. I hate buckles on rugs too!

I don't think I've ever seen one of the slots get torn, it's not something that had ever crossed my mind to worry about. They're useful if you have a mouthy playful horse in the field, less surcingle on show for them to grab. I haven't noticed a difference between the ones with slots and ones without slots as to the amount of mud under the rug and I've seen a lot of different rugs as a groom.

I just bought 2 shires turnout rugs, one has the clip in fastenings and the other has buckles!
