Horse has thoroughly pee'd me off today. ONE AND A HALF HOURS!!! That's how long I tried to get him out of the yard. I tried everything I know to get him out, but no luck at all. I called my mum and while I waited, I took him into the jumping field to have a wander, since he needs to get used to being in there too.

Finally mother arrived and we went for our walk, where he was such a big brave boy! A man was moving his wheelie bin behind a hedge on a gravel path :O He was shaking like a leaf, poor thing, but he didn't make any attempt to go home. We also met a pram, runner with dog, cyclists, vans, lorries and other such things! I've never seen it so busy, but he took it all in his stride.

We had some trots and he was very very good, almost making up for his shocking behaviour earlier :P We will get there!!

Now, pictures :D

Stretch!!

Striding out on our own, past the 'horse gate', where we've had most of our issues before. None today though :)

HEHE they can be sooooooooooooooooooooooo frustrating!!!! You will get there in the end, and when you do it will feel more of an achievement! Love the stretching pic!

He reminded me of the naughty kids I see at work! Though, I can't exactly drag him out by the arm, kicking and screaming XD A bit too big :P

I wish I'd videoed him stretching, he looked like a ballerina :P

well done for getting out in the end, and i admire your determination!!! and well done to ned for not spooking out :) seems like all you have to work on now is just getting out of the yard on your own and you'll be fine :) have you tried asking someone from the yard just to walk you down the drive and out the yard and then for them to stop and you go on your own? it worked on my friends horse :) he didn't want to move at all from the yard on his own, but would be fine if walked down the drive and then he'd be absolutely fine the rest of the way :) good luck! :D

Yea, we're thinking of doing this with mother, soon :) But I'm wondering if he'll want to leave mum, so I may ask YO to help. To be honest, I was so close to tears! I never usually cry or get that upset about silly things he does, but I didn't get much sleep and was far too tired to be with silly horses XD
We'll get there :) I never thought we'd be this far on already, I was preparing to not be walking out for months yet! Thanks :D

i know that feeling, when you're tired and just want a nice quiet ride but ponio decides that its a good day to be silly and all you wanna do then is cry  why don't you start by your mum staying behind on walks, hiding behind things once she's stayed behind so he can't see her, gradually get your mum to stop for longer distances to the point where she can just stop near the yard and he won't notice, she can then walk back to the yard :) when you have those minor steps back always think about the leap forwards he's taken :) a couple of months ahead of schedule is a great achievement! :)

That's a really good idea :) We'll have to start trying to do that properly! We tried it a little today, but I was running late and had to get back for work :(

These things are sent to try us !!! and try us they do. When you think what you have overcome and achieved with Ned so far its great. Days like this we tend to forget what we have overcome and focus on the problem a bit too much. I am sure you will get through this in the end it just may take a little while. But you did get out and that is the main thing, just keep working with it and I am sure soon you will be singing our Neds praises again. They all have their moments for sometimes what seems to us to be for no reason what so ever. Great pics it seems a lovely area that you are in :D

wow, I'd never have guessed he was half haflinger!

Sorry I'm not much help on the hacking issue. The only thing I did to get my boy to leave the yard was meet someone part way on the hack, at different points on different days so that he went with the expectation that he would meet someone en route.

He's suddenly become so big! (Spirit that is, should have mentioned the little guys name!) He's only 2 and a bit :O I do wonder what his other half is, we did think TB, but he's such a big chunky lad, we're starting to have doubts. Perhaps Irish Draft or hunter or something, as his mother is from Ireland (he was a surprise :P)

I was going to start meeting my friend out with her horse, but I heard a horror story about how her horse behaved on hacks and I think I'll wait until her horse settles a bit, as she's only just moved yards.

Ebony - You're totally right, bad things seem much worse when they've been good!

Good effort, I'd have thrown the towel in after about 15 minutes :D your persistence is paying off!

I hate when the horse has a 'ha ha, I'm going to be annoying' day, always think 'ok, you'll get bored of this before I do' and usually fail lol! Horse then smugs back off to paddock having done no work and I just be cross for a while :D however I did persist for 40 minutes the other day when he was being a turd and wouldn't let me catch him and was rewarded with a lovely schooling session (if a little begrudging!)

Well done Nah! I know exactly how you feel; my horse was the same when I first got him almost a year ago - he was extermely nappy and refused to do anything on his own, but in the last few weeks we've been enjoying hour and a half hacks on our own :D

I know what you mean about wanting to cry - I certainly did too, but with patience you'll get there. I never dreamt in a million years that I'd be able to hack out alone, but through schooling and consistency we've achieved more than I ever could have hoped.

Keep up the good work, it pays off in the end :D

Have you tried riding with two dressage whips?

If he hesitates when you ask him to go forwards, rotate your wrists (don't pull back on the reins) so that the whips flap up and down like wings. You don't need to touch the horse at all with the whips (seeing the movement should send them forwards) or tap both shoulders on a downwards flap, if you need to send him on more.

AprilBlossom - I would usually have thrown in the towel, but I have made up my mind that I simply can't let him win anymore. He hasn't gotten away with much recently :P
Archie(R.I.P), was the most fantastic horse anyone could ever wish for...but if he was having one of 'those' days, you were NOT going to catch him :P He would happily give you the run around all day long!

Clement - I can't stay mad at him for long ^^
I see him looking at me, with those big brown eyes and my heart is melted ^^
It really makes me so happy with other people call him gorgeous, he was "ugly horse" for so long. I must admit even I thought he was ugly when I first saw him.

That face!!!

Ooh! I took so long posting, I got 2 new posts :P

TakeaChance - It's success stories like that that keep me going :D So glad you've got so far with your horse! I hope to be there with Ned eventually ^^

Faracat - That's not a bad idea! I ride with one and he REALLY listens to that, but the problem is, when he doesn't want to go, he swings his bum away from it, so 2 would stop that. I'll give it a go :D thanks!

Can't edit, on phone.
But ps, good on your mum!

I remember having to phone my dad once when my mare refused to walk past a dark patch on the road what had previously been a puddle (FGS!) i had only been there 20 mins when I gave up and phoned him, he was out cycling and I had to persevere for another 15 mins til he got there and could rescue me!

What would we do without our parents!

Nah, i really love reading your Ned updates! Well done, i would probably have cried!

Your Ned really really reminds me of my boy, what breed is he? :DIm not 100% sure what mine is but we think hes tb x french trotter, but there is something about ned that everytime i see his pic he makes me think of mine. Their personalities (and possibly historyif i remember correctly- in that both of them have had a tough time at some point? ) seem quite similar. Maybe its jsut because theyre bay lol:rolleyes:

My boy naps badly leaving the yard on his own, with someone with him on foot hes fine, plus hes scared of funny coloured flowers, manhole covers etc, etc.... everytime i see you playing with an umbrella or doing spook-busting with ned it makes me once again think...'ooh i should do that with mine!'

ps...love your roads, it looks like a nice area to hack out in!

Feathered: Mother has been so good :) She's ridden quite a bit in the past, but isn't want you'd called "horsey". She takes a real interest in Ned and I'm so glad I have someone (in real life) to talk to :) I wouldn't have got very far without her.

BlairandAzria: Thanks :D
He's a standardbred and yes, he's had quite a past, poor lad :( Thankfully Ned's never been scared of flowers, but one of the TBs used to have such a hissy fit if he saw white flowers! It took ages to go past them, haha! Horses really do make you wonder XD

That one lane is amazing, apart from today (apparently!) it's super quiet and sometimes I don't see a soul, aside from a rabbit or buzzard! Sadly, to get to the other nice lanes, it means walking down a 60mph road, with blind bends and sheep/cows on either side...not fun! There's no path or verge either. Most people are pretty good down there, but you always get the idiots who think 60 means 90 and 'please pass wide and slow' means 'It's ok, we're good target practice!'.

I don't see what the problem is?

His lordship doesn't want to leave without his personal paparazzi present. Makes perfect sense :p

Er, the problem is obviously that the term "paparazzi" is clearly plural and there is only one paparazza present.

I'm surprised you missed that, rhino! :D

(saying that, I'm not sure if feminising paparazzo to paparazza is acceptable either!)

Fool!

I take it you don't speak Italian then? Score, finally something I can do (marginally) better than rhino! :D

Oh I'm no linguist. French to Standard Grade (because I had to), and a pitiful amount of Spanish :(

I'm still trying to get to grips with English  :D

Me too really, not for want of trying though! I sucked big time at French- dropped it when I was about 14 having studied it for 10 years and still knowing virtually none! Have a fair grasp of Latin, some german from gcses and a bit of Italian but

*sodding phone!* I once tried to teach myself Russian... I did not get far! I am no linguist either!

(I am however expert at thread derailments!)
