My horse was kicked on Sunday and came in lame with a puncture wound to his forearm. The vet came and was concerned it was fractured as he was lame in walk so put on a Robert Jones bandage and told me to cross tie him 24/7. He was xrayed today and they still are not sure as most xrays were clear but there was a little doubt over one, he is now splinted and re bandaged and has to be cross tied for a week before being re xrayed in a weeks time.
Has anyone had any experience with either the cross tying or the fracture?

I am devestated as you can imagine.

Does clipcloppop still come on here?
She had hers cross tied for a fracture for about 12 weeks I think.
Try PM'ing her in case she doesn't see this.

Not this type of fracture, but my old 11.3 fractured her pelvis- Had about 12 weeks cross tied and atleast 6 months box rest and further field rest. She came 75% right- she wasn't so agile after but had been exceptional before, still won over 3foot SJ and placed county showing after the fracture.

Fingers crossed for your boy.

My old horse had a fractured cannon bone following a kick.....he wasn't cross tied but on box rest for about 10weeks with regular xrays.

He was a nightmare on box rest- cross-tying him would have driven him up the wall so he was basically sedated and everyone on the livery yard that I was on at the time had to stay well away- he was fine when it was quiet but if anyone went past him it set him off.

Despite his stressing, he recovered 100%.....back to full ridden work including jumping.

Thanks for this, makes me feel better.
I am scared he will get caught up in the night, I have put vetwrap round all his headcollar rings and clips and also his bucket hooks.

Get an euissage massager to use on him. Will help relieve tight muscles without him moving. Either borrow one, or get the insurance to pay for one.

Hi, how is your horse going?? I have has a similar experience my horse got kicked on valentines day. hi was kicked on his near side front leg about an inch above his knee there was quite a deep cut. i took him into the vets the next day for a x ray, they didnt find anything so they wrapped it up and i took him home the next morning i went to feed him and he couldnt weight bare on it at all. So i called the vets and took him back in there. And they re x rayd and found a spiral fracture.
So we had to leave him in at the vets and i was told he was to be x tied for 2 months. there was not much i could do they told me at any time he could have a blow out, and because he was such a big horse they wanted him to loose alot off weight, he was tied in a corner and had his water and feed right in front off him but he was still able to put his head down. They pressure bandaged his legs. it was a very testing time, he stood for so long and was such a good boy, we had a fright when he got an infection so he had to go back on antibiotics and it cleared up.
Right on the 2 month stage he decided to lay down and broke his x ties, the vets couldnt keep him up so we had to make the decision to let him lay down.
They warned me that that was very dangerous as getting up and down was putting alot off pressure on him. He slept and layed down for a further 2 weeks. we did another x ray and he was fine to come home.
He was to be in a stable for a further 4 weeks and was to go back for another X ray so on saturday his 4 weeks was up so we took him in and the Xrays are showing great healing and good amounts of calcifation to that area.
The farrier was there to finally take his shoes off and check his feet out as we incurred foot abcess in his other front foot. his feet are severley bruised but farrier was happy otherwise.
So now it is another 4weeks off in a small yard during the day and back in his stable off a night and im aloud to hand walk him for 20 min a day. he is now putting weight back on and looking happy again. if you would like to know more just shoot me a message.
goodluck.

Only ever dealt with very very minor hairline fractures myself, but do have a positive story for you. About 15 years ago horse on same yard had a fracture that required a few months cross tying. Not long after it got severe colic, broke the cross ties to roll, & ended up having to be walked to stop it from rolling whilst awaiting vet. Ended up going on an hours journey for surgery. Iirc, the thinking was if it didn't get treated for the colic, it was dead anyway so might as well worry about the leg later. Long story short, horse made a full recovery. It only hacked previously though so no idea if its performance was affected, but then again 15yrs ago treatment wasn't as good. Hope yours is ok.
