Just wondering if any one has any ideas. My horse 16.3ISH hunter I bought last autumn. He regularly rests his near hind behind his off hind and gently lifts near hind up and down lightly rubbing tendon on off hind. It looks like a pantomime horse! He was fully vetted at purchase. His way of going was quite tight as if big heavy man had been riding him and I have spent time working him long and low. He now tracks up well and goes kindly in an outline. He has had holistic tree saddle fitted, Back massage and chiropracter. He has displayed some signs still of being cold backed when you first get on, just 2 or 3 strides. Flexion tests were all fine when vetted. When out hunting he throws his head almost like a nervous tic and today took him over a jump, first in a long time, and after beautiful steady approach on landing threw in head chucking and a buck. Much appreciated if anyone has any ideas or suggestions. Drawing a blank with vets and chiropracters who give him a clean bil of health.

I had a big 16.3 Warmblood that did the same.
He would rest his back legs the same. He bronked on landing after a fence a few times and ended up standing on me for good measure as I came off!
He had been checked over previously and had also passed a full 5 stage vetting.
Got a different McTimoney Chiro out and it turned out he had an uneven pelvis. She sorted him out.

Great thanks for your help. It is good to know he is not the only horse in the world that stands that way. Maybe a second opinion chiropracter is the way to go. If not could be busy in the panto season!

We've got a 12hh Welshie who also does this - it seems in his case to be itchy legs - we take a stiff dandy brush with us as if he's had boots on, got his legs wet, got sand on his legs etc, he will start scratching like mad! And if his staff don't sort it out, the little rotter will go down and roll. Where ever he is!

my IDxTB does this, she will only do it when she is completely settled and not stressed. She does it with both back legs equally, has had everything checked out and there is nothing wrong with her, just seems to be a habit.

Thanks. He does it whilst resting in the stable and the field but he has done it standing quietly by covert whilst switched off. It remains a mystery why he started doing it but maybe it is now just a habit. Thanks for your replies.

our horse did much the same as yours. I mentioned to our vet (top ortho vet) that he stood cross legged and said that is a sign of stifle problems. After many diagnostic tests we discovered he had torn his cruciate ligament

Thumper crosses his back legs and leans against the back wall when in his stable (all he needs is a fag hanging out of his mouth to complete the picture).

Perhaps he's not as odd as I thought he was........

my old welsh cob has always done it - he has nothing wrong with him, he does it to have an itch and then seems to forget where they are and just stands with them crossed. caused many shoes to be lost when he was shod as he'd tried to walk off with crossed legs doh!
