Crossing Welsh sections, what to register foals as?

Lola pony is the offspring of a secton C sire and a section A dam. She is registered as a section C. She looks like an A or B though, she is very fine, typical pretty little A/B head and not in the least cobby.

So, who decides what to register 'mixed' Welshies as? What if, like Lola, they look nothing like that particular section should look like?

Just wondering how it works while I am looking through her passport!

Your post is a bit ambiguous, as you say she is already registered as a section C. The problem with mixing the types, is that you end up with a pony that is not true to type and you should be able to look at an A, D, C and D and see that they are all quite different types of welsh pony, not just different heights.

Anyone who wants to show seriously would never mix the section types as you have done, because you are very unlikely to get a pony that is competetive for pure showing. It doesn't mean you won't get a useful pony...

I haven't bred Lola! I got her a few months ago.

It just seemed odd to me that you can register a 'mixed' section as a pure section when it evidently isn't.

It's like mixing a miniture Schnauzer dog with a giant Schnauzer and registering the puppies as one or the other, when they aren't going to reach the breed standard for either.

To me you should be able to look at a Welshie and be able to tell from it's confo what section it is. In Lola's case this wouldn't work. She looks very much like an A/B but is registered as a C.

Perhaps there should be another class of Welshie introduced, the 'mixed Welsh' class :D

I had a D x A who registered as a C, to be honest i never thought about it really, he looks like a C to me. I guess you could also argue its the same with re-registering an over height C as a D, or a D that doesnt make the height as a C. Welsh breeding can be quite complicated lol.

ditto navaho, my daughter has a A x D section C that is very true to type, a really chunky but pretty pony.

I once read somewhere that if photos of an A, C & D were put together with no reference to size in them that you should not be able to tell one from another. Although to me section A's always have the prettier heads and section B's of course are totally different with being bred for riding pony type.
