We have had a pair of big crows move in at the yard and the bloody things are a nightmare. They have decided that the other crows they can see in the arena mirrors must be attacked at every opportunity and they just fly full pelt with craws flailing at the mirrors.
As you can imagine it makes quite a noise and they do it when people are trying to ride and as you can image the racket and flapping has been spooking the horses. It's also making a complete mess of the mirrors.

Can any one offer any suggestion of ways to deter them, or even better get rid of them all together?

One was photographed on the yard today stealing someones sharp knife. They're arming themselves!!!

Not sure if it works with something as wily as a crow, but isn't there something about having a model of a bird of prey sitting on a rooftop around the area you want to clear?

Did I imaging it, was hanging up a dead bird to scare away other birds in the old days?
Not that you'd fancy road kill hanging up in your out door...

They are very smart birds, try reasoning with them? lol

One venue where we compete has a mirror and they had a collar dove constantly jumping at it. They put a model owl on the fence facing the mirror and the problem stopped.

I was thinking that a model bird wouldnt be a great idea as i have seen them relentlessly pursuing and attacking the buzzard family that live by the yard, so they clearly arent bothered by birds of prey.

I'm going to clean the mirrors this weekend and see if they have actually done any damage.

The people who installed our mirrors recommended putting up a model bird of prey. Before we did so, our resident jackdaws were having a right go at the mirrors for hours at a time. Since the decoys went up two or three years ago, they've hardly bothered. Coincidence? Maybe, but I'm not taking the decoys down!

We used to get this at my old yard, they completely ruined the one corner of the mirror over time. I don't think we ever came up with an answer, no doubt its happening again and again.

I hope that the mirrors aren't damaged. Mine weren't, though they were covered in streaks of spit and blood from the headbutting jackdaws. It cleaned off ok, though.

And me!!!! Beautiful arena!!
Thank you, and also thanks to the others who made kind remarks about my arena. Still can't quite believe that it's mine, we were here for 25 years before it was installed. I used to mark out a grass arena in the same spot :).
