Horrified by undercover Panorama which exposed treatment of people with learning difficulties.

I am so pleased they are getting what they deserve but wonder how many more people, old and young are abused behind closed doors.
 
I was shocked when I read the story. These care homes will employ anyone. No way on this Earth would I end up in one of those. Sooner take a bullet to the head than end up being abused
 
Today's news from (I think)Bristol Crown Court - 17 in the dock some jailed others given suspended sentences. Young people with learning difficulties smacked, doused with cold water and horribly bullied.
 
This is the home that was exposed by Panorama about 18 months ago. I'd be interested to know if anyone from the company employing them will be prosecuted. Obviously woefully inadequate to work with vulnerable people so there must be hundreds of questions to ask about recruitment, T&Cs, training, supervision etc etc.
 
If anyone (like me) has ever worked with special needs, this will make you sick to the stomach.

Yes there are all sorts of excuses, i.e. unskilled/untrained staff, unrealistically low staffing levels, the sheer pressure of the environment, difficult and possibly aggressive client group etc etc, but ultimately this is an issue for management. Just WHERE was the supervision???

And this is not an isolated case by any means: I posted on here recently about my poor old mum being badly treated in hospital by agency staff....... and the replies I got, plus PM's (thank you all by the way for being so kind) indicated that abuse to vulnerable/ill/elderly or infirm people is widespread, endemic even in the care industry and in hospitals.

Hopefully these people will get what they deserve - tho' perhaps justice will only be done many years down the line when THEY are ill, confused, or old, and get just a little of what they've given out by some thug who is masquerading as a "carer" and does the same thing to them.

OMG it makes me SOOOO angry this sort of thing. Monsters, every single one of them. How the hell do they sleep at night?
 
One of the problems with any care work is that the people being cared for are not valued by society in general. This results in their care being 'deliverd' to whoever can tender the cheapest option. This means minimum wage, little or no training, the lowest possible staffing to pass the inadequate inspection process, etc etc. Never forget that 'care' is now a for profit business, which means that the bottom line is in fact the bottom line.
 
I know the points about more training & supervision needed and better wages but...seriously...these people that do this sort of thing are at least smart enough to know right from wrong? They *know* they are doing/did something wrong-let's not mitigate the actions with socio/political economics.
 
is this the ash court care home youre talking about ? i have not seen this one but watched the Winterbourne care home one. that was horrible to watch and made me feel physically sick. i think this was one or two years ago.

Nearly made me cry watching the reports on the news. I couldn't watch the Panorama programme. My 22 year old nephew has severe learning and physical disabilities and is now in a care home. He comes home every weekend and luckily he can't wait to go back on a Sunday night. The guy that runs the home also encourages the parents to turn up whenever they want and without notice which is very encouraging.

Those poor people and what they've gone through.
 
YorksG is right on it.

Caring is a vocation. Many carers in these establishments are usually on minimum wage and some pushed into the jobs by DWP 'Providers' whose sole aim is to get folks off the dole.

Caring should be valued for the difficult, physical and emotionally draining career it is and have a salary to match. Until then, old and vulnerable people will suffer IMO.
