(Load of bollocks I think..but tell me your views)

i think it's rubbish! the dogs look great, get fantastically cared for and genuinely seem as if they love every minute of being in the spotlight!
i think it gives dog owners a chance to show off their dogs and they deserve to in my opinion.

Load of rubbish! Look at the dogs. Doesn't take a genius to work out how healthy they are. And all the tail wagging! Means happy dogs!

Hate show leads though

Like little strings! I know the point is that your eye is not drawn to a big hefty lead taking away from the look of the dog. I'd be constantly worrying about it digging in. But I'm just overdramatic in that way :s

I didn't realise you show dogs. What breed do you keep?

I was at like a wee KC run class that gave a run down on showing and there show leads were horrid, really thin like string, can't describe what kind of material..like twined? :s

Not my own....but St.Bernards when I can.

Yes for the lighter breeds a narrower lead is often used though it's almost always loose and hanging over the shoulders

Rubbish, utter rubbish. I went to crufts last year - you should have seen the Dalmations. Rolling, playing, barking, jumping around everything - they were having the time of their lives

These ones were up round neck. I noticed some up round neck, but kind of in a noose, so loose at top and others tight around whole neck, it's that I don't like.

I love St Bernards!

PMSL....if they didn't want to do it they wouldn't.....especially the agility and flyballers, who have the most asked of them...they obviously enjoy the job, all you need to do is watch it on telly to believe it!!

the showing isn't cruel.......or if it is, can anyone explain HOW??? If they were desperately nervous, I don't think they would be happily strutting their stuff, and they probably wouldn't look so healthy!!

im looking forward to seeing the working dogs today, as a dane owner. I KNOW, if a dane dont wanna do something it just aint happening. they love all the attention they get. the shows are such a regular thing for these dogs, crufts is just like any other day out, they are all extemely well socialized, and have a wonderful time, to look as good as they do there not treated cruely are they, it would show in the dogs body language.

What a load of balls. I know several Boston show breeders and their dogs are incredibly well looked after. Most do other things, too, like obedience, therapy work, flyball and agility, as well as all the regular dog stuff.

How about highlighting puppy farms or people who breed dogs willy nilly from their kitchen instead?

I don't think it's cruel. I don't like the benching, but my experence is that the dogs have to like (or love) what they're doing or the won't show themselves off.

I think thats rubbish! Of course they enjoy it otherwise they would show they wouldn't want to be doing it.

My friend, Tony Clarke, has won the Crufts agility 3 times in a row with his dog and he cares for his dogs so well and you can see how well they are doing.

They all look great and like they are having great fun!

The dogs look happy. Its the handlers costumes and some of the judges that make me cringe!!!! Last year they showed a rather rotund lady judge bending over with her bottom towards the camera and it was not a pretty sight as she was wearing a dress which rode up showing most of her thighs!!!!
And one handler was wearing gold trousers with an orange top and orange hair!!!!! OMG

I personally dislike the way some of the dogs are pulled around with the lead and slapped under the muzzle to gain their attention before going round the ring to show their paces. Saw quite a bit of that this evening with the working class. Appreciate they want their dogs looking/standing as well as poss and moving fluently but IMPO some go a little too OTT. When showing horses you can't go and position their legs etc (ok you can make them stand square) so think they shouldn't be SO interferring. Also personally felt that although some of the dogs were not obese a few were borderline (Lab yesterday big boned dog but carrying plenty as was the Rotti tonight, IMHO

In answer to your question - can't see the cruelty in crufts I'm afraid

I'm not commenting. I used to be friends with a girl who sometimes took her dogs to Crufts to compete. It has tainted my view of dog showing forever

I currently have 6 dogs all of whom were bred with the possibility of showing in mind ( although I also want 'my' dogs to be able to work and have wonderful temperaments too

)- of those 6 only 2 genuinely enjoy showing - guess what ? - those that don't like it are not shown ! - the plain fact is that you will not win with a dog that is not enjoying it - it's whole body language will show how it's feeling and successful dogs have to really sparkle in the show ring - the two that I show just LOVE it - their tails wag all the way through the judging and they adore all the fuss and attention - you may have a fantatsic looking dog who fits the breed standard to perfection - but if they stand in the ring like a sack of spuds then they will not win - whereas the one that has that 'look at me ' qualityand exudes enjoyment will do well - even if they are physically not such good specimens.

Take a good look at the group winners at Crufts - they will all be dogs that are reall show offs and are in their element in the show ring.

Couldn't agree more Milor, an unhappy dog will not perform well. Have to say though I showed at Crufts years ago at Olympia and although I wouldn't say it was cruel our dogs certainly didn't enjoy it. They had to stay in the halls from 9.00 am to 5 pm, and the only exercise areas were roped off places covered in shavings, which stank. For house trained dogs who were used to going to the loo on grass this was not appreciated! It was also incredibly hot and they did feel the heat. This was for breed showing, I also competed in the agility which was better because they didnt have to be there quite so early and the benching areas had more space. I think the NEC is much better though, with far more room for the dogs.

If Crufts is "cruel" what's HOYs?

It's a load of balls if you ask me. My pet dogs are show dogs and I can honestly say they get more excited over the show bag and leads then they do their normal leads. It's the same for agility, if the treat bag and clicker come out 3 of mine who do agility go whappy.

If they don't want to do it they wont. Stanley isn't keen so he does agility instead because he loves it and prefers it.

Harris is such a show off. As soon as he's in the ring he has "look at me" plastered all over him, esp on the move - this he would not do if he didn't enjoy being shown.
