Now, judging is judging and I cannot stand poodles but am I alone in thinking that the Standard Poodle from America was outstanding and shone above the others, yet didn't even get placed in the top 4

The group judge is originally a poodle man - quite often group judges or all-rounders will not put up their own breed, either because they don't like the specimen themselves or because they don't want be called biased
 
Ah thank you. I know they're not to everyone's taste but having grown up with Standards I love them.

Back to the point of the post, I missed crufts last night and am now keen to see the American Standard that Severnmiles talks about.

I do remember a white Standard winning 3 or 4 years ago.
 
I must say they are not my taste as show dogs at all, with the lion cut (is that right? with the pompoms?) but your boy looks so natural and happy that you have to love him

Must admit I haven't watched Crufts on TV for years...or been to it either... I just ring my mum to make sure she won't be on TV then give it a miss

I do keep teasing her and saying it is about time she judged there, but not long before that happens now I think

I need to figure out a way to watch Crufts online as I never miss it but am in Holland now!!! So if anyone has any handy tips of websites that will be showing it (and BBC iPlayer doesn't work outside of the UK).

I love poodles too (as long as they don't have that stupid clip which just looks like animal abuse). Once we move house I'm hoping to get one to do agility and obedience with as long as I can persuade OH that they aren't 'gay' dogs!!!!
 
We were there yesterday and watched the utility judging and we were also shocked that the beautiful standard didn't make the top 4!! But then i am biased as we own Poodles.
Yes indeed the judge is a poodle judge, we have watched him judge on many occasions.

Agreed. The poodle always does so well over here; my poor Boston Terriers never get a look in in the utility group

No offence to the poodle/fuzzy fans but I was rather thrilled that a short-haired non-showy dog (the Beagle) won at Westminster this year

Yea I thought that too - but I haven't really got the first clue about dog judging! She certainly had the most presence though..
 
Agree the Standard was beautiful, but do not like the lion clip. Far prefer the natural look! A friend used to work a lovely black standard poodle in agility with some success , she had a heck of a jump.

Not a patch on Klassic Irish Prince; he's won a number of Best in Shows in the US, which is a great achievement for a lesser breed, like the BT.

There's a reason for that clip

they were originally working dogs and mostly in water. You couldn't send it into the water in a full coat so, traditionally, that clip was used to protect the joints and vital organs: the "pom poms" on the legs are obviously to protect those joints, the ones on the back/rump are to protect the kidneys and the puffy bit at the front is to protect the heart and lungs. It's used in the show ring because the dog is supposed to represent it's capabilities for the job it was bred for as well as being as close a representative of it's breed standard.
