Crufts - your winner?

Normally not a 'small dog' person but the little Corgi's expression was classic!

The Rottie was also gorgeous. I think it was nice to see a dog like that win his group. with so much press about these sorts of dogs being 'nasty' (load of **** in my view but different topic, different day) I liked it when the bloke was saying afterwards what fab dogs they are etc etc.

The Vizla was lovely though, pleased it won.

Interesting point Frodob, you would imagine the standard of the country of origin would be the one all other countries should adhere to wouldn't you, but obviously not. But you only have to look at some of the "English" type winning GSDs and compare then with dogs in Germany to see that it ain't the case.

Ets. Just looked at UK standard, white seems to be an allowed colour or white "broken with another colour", so obviously the UK KC think they can improve on the Italians. :(

Sorry MM - Despite the name; Iggies do not originate from Italy, but from the far east. They got the Italian part because that's where they became popular as companion dogs bought home by roman soldiers.

I couldn't watch Crufts as not in the UK but went on the results website (in the hope of finding info on Viszlak, which obviously I didn't as I had no clue of her name or of her dog's name) anyway... I found a piccie of the lovely Italian greyhound who won Best of Breed, and was shocked to see how much white he has! In Italy they have to be a solid colour, white patches are heavily penalised except for very small ones on the paws / chest -- definitely not the amount of white that dog had!

It's a pointless post sorry. It's just that I assumed that breed standards would be European-wide! A friend who is a golden retriever breeder is often importing dogs from abroad, she has bought her latest stud dog from Finland precisely with the aim of expanding her gene pool. This would be absolutely impossible in the case of an Italian greyhound, you couldn't run the risk of having that much white right? Am I being stupid / missing something or can it really happen that breed standards differ THAT much from one country to the other?

The Best of Breed Iggie was a stunner. I went to see one of my dogs sister who was showing (she came third in her class :) ). There are still very few coloured IG's in the UK even though they are acceptable. I would say that 95% or more of the dogs showing were of solid colour, mostly fawns and reds. Its a shame they are not in the hound group though, being a sight hound - why are we a toy breed just because we are small? IG's were once working dogs, not just companions.

Yogi had won several BIS throughout the last year and beaten many records, so didn't take a genius to tip him for Crufts BIS this year. However I do agree that the judging at that level is very political (to put it politely).

Apparently when Zamp (vom Thermodos, the late GSD, was Sieger and then taken to Crufts, bit undignified IMO for a Sieger to be shown Crufts but hey ho) was tipped to take the Pastoral Group and the BIS when he appeared several years ago, but his young handler had never shown in England, especially indoors so dog was a bit unsettled, and did not know to keep the dog at her side and go at a normal pace, so went into the ring and gave him a long lead and started fast gaiting him. Oh well!

I think it was a very well deserved win for Yogi and the real icing on the cake of his amazing show career. I have never seen another vizla move like him and he has the most fantastic temperment and is an amazing show dog.

I was rooting for Yogi all the way. The maltese is a lovely dog but i didnt think the judge would like him. I was sure the pharoh hound was going to get RBIS! But the scottie was very sweet, i dont know much about them though lol.

A bit of an off topic thing here, but the akita that won the group... My girl beat to get to the Stakes Finals she went to in October! That is our claim to fame, she was reserve to little old us lol Clearly my girl should have won the hound group, there were several in it that she beat at the finals too lol!

Someone recently asked if we could still call German Shepherds that, given all the bloodlines coming in from France, Italy and the Czech Republic :p

Well, a French Shepherd, just sounds wrong
A Czech Shepherd sounds like a fabric
But an Italian Shepherd sounds very exotic... or am I being biased to the prefix of "Italian" :)

It does sound good!

A lot of people think the Czech dogs should be a breed on their own now, they and the DDR dogs can be very far removed from the present standard (but very similar to the original type, of course!) and there are whispers that there is more than a bit of Malinois blood in there :p
