Few questions. How tight should it be - ie from the saddle to the base of dock? I have been fitting so it is flat ie not loose but not tight if that makes sense.

Also pony is non too impressed - bucked my son off on sunday. I am presuming he will get used to the feeling??

Any other things I should be aware of when using?

Cruppers should be fitted so that you can easily get your hand placed UPRIGHT under it on the croup , i.e with your little finger on the pony's back and the thumb on top of the first finger - as if you were measureing in "hands" the old fashioned way, if that makes sense. the bit under the tail should be about 2" below where the tail meets the body when the pony is walking. I would suggest you lunge the pony in it for a few days until he stops clamping the tail and accepts it.

It may rub the delicate skin at the side or the tail, I use a little vaseline there if it does. Also, keep the padded part well oiled.

It should lie flat as you have it but obviously not be so tight that it's uncomfortable - you should be able to easily slide your hand under it. It should only come into play when the saddle starts to slip, and not be pulling on it all the time IYSWIM.

I'd probably lunge him a couple of times first to get him used to it - if he's bucking he's still not acclimatised!

Be aware if the saddle slips forward and pulls the crupper tight it can quickly make a pony very sore. Dismount and rearrange asap. If you are in the middle of a jumping round do not finish the course - pony welfare comes first. If a crupper is always getting pulled too tight look at getting a breeching fitted instead.
