In the past couple of weeks I have noticed that my pony has got little crusty sores behind both of his knees. They are small hard raised lumps and the skin is flakey. He doesn't appear to be bothered by them at all but I would obviously like shot of them!

Can anyone tell me what they are or what they are caused by? Is there any treatments?

Oh, also he is a connie so theres no feathers involved :)

Many thanks x

Sounds like a touch of mudfever/rainscald, or a little bit of cellulitis maybe. Try washing the area with hibiscrub once a day, don't forget to rinse and dry thoroughly, though. If you've got any antibacterial cream, apply that afterwards. :)

My cob, with some feather, gets the same. It's definitely not mudfever, and like your cob, it doesn't affect her in any way. Farrier refers to it as "itchy heel" and I thought it was harvest mites. One of my livery horses had a smiilar sort of patch on his belly. Zinc & Castor Oil, Johnsons' Baby Oil and Sudocrem have all helped in the past.Hibiscrub didn't, but you can always try it and see. I will ask the vet about it when he comes to do boosters, but meanwhile can usually keep it cleared up.

She never had it until this summer, and I put it down to the very dry weather. Do post if you get any better answers than this - which you will!
