My Haflinger has got lots of lumps on him, mainly on his rump. They are yellow and crusty, like they've been weeping, and the skin underneath is quite sore. If I brush them the hair comes away with the crusts! I took him to the vets but they just tested them for ringworm (which I could have told them it wasn't!) but they didn't shed any light on what it was! Has anyone else come across this?

Sounds like urticaria. Mine gets it. We control it with anti-histamines, but if he has a very violent reaction, the lumps will burst & a yellowy serum will ooze from them & crust over. Removing the crusts will often leave a bald patch where the hair has adhered to the serum. It is an allergic reaction to something (also known as hives or nettle rash).

That'll be rainscald,my horse has always been prone to it even though he's suitably rugged.

He had it when I bought him and even now he gets a few very small scabs just like the one's you've described in the winter.

It's easy enough to treat-I use malaseb and with a couple of washes it's gone.

Is this something they get just when they're out in the rain? That's a tough one if that's what it is as I can't rug him in the summer and rarely rug him in the winter. I do use malaseb, how often do you use it on yours? Some of the crusty lumps are quite big and he seems to have more than ever this year.

He doesn't seem to have lumps as such before the crusts, he just has lots of crusts, more than ever this year. Do you get anti-histamines from the vet? I think I shall try them and keep using the malaseb as suggested in the other answer I've had. I'm worried he'll end up completely bald!!
