I was grooming my 3 year old today and was horrified when I saw that her teats were a bit crusty looking.
What is the best course of action? I'm not sure whether I should just wash them or put Sudacrem on to loosen the crusty bits off.
I've only ever had geldings so mares nipples are new to me!
What shall I do?

I would start with some warm soapy water and your hand or a soft sponge. Rub gently, do not try to peel anything off.

If there is remaining crustyness, try rubbing in a little baby oil and leave to soften and then use the warm soapy water to remove.

May need repeating acopuple of times over the next week to get everything off, but do it gently and gradually, its a delicate area.

The main thing is to make sure that this area receives attention during your routine grooming to prevent further build up.

Thanks for your suggestions. I'll certainly be keeping an eye on them from now on. I thought the boys sheaths were bad enough but ooh, crusty nipples - poor little mare, I feel very neglectful.

My mare ADORES having her udder tickled, so I just gently pick off the goo. I use udder cream to help deter flies, and it gets dusty so this is a regular thing.
