Day 1 ended in fine style for the British team in Rome. Nick Skelton (Russell) and Robert Smith (Vangelis S) sharing the spoils in the 6 Bar competiton. They both managed to clear all the fences in the final round...with the last elment of the line standing at a whopping 2.15m (that's 7ft in old money

) Imagine riding a grid with the last part at your eye level when mounted and you'll get the idea. John Whitaker (Lactic Two) claimed joint 3rd also.

Earlier in the day Nick Skelton (Arko III) picked up a minor placing in a 1.50m speed class.

The Nations Cup kicks off at 2.30pm (BST) today.

Britain won the Nations Cup on a total score of 8, with Germany, France, Belgium and Switzerland sharing 2nd place on 12.

John Whitaker and Peppermill jumping 1 of only 6 double clears.

Well done Team GBR....definitely the way to bounce back from the disappointment of La Baule a fortnight ago

The Brits continue to do well at this show, with John Whitaker sharing 1st place in last nights Puissance competition. John and Marcus Fuchs decided to share the prize at the end of round 3 with the wall already standing at 2.15m (7ft)...rather than put their horses through another round.

That means a British rider has won a major class on every day of the show so far....and with the Grand Prix to come, can only bode well

Is it the europeans this year?

Do you think that the Super Leauge should have some bearing on Olympic qualification - or does it already?

its eventing europeans so presume must also be SJ and Dressage! It has no bearing on qualification for olympics. Think there are arguments to it having a bearing and not as at the end of the day only one team can be relgated and promoted to the super league each year which means some teams may stay in who shouldn't and others who should get up can't!

The classes at Rome doave a bearing on qualification for the Europeans, and the Europeans are a qualifier for the Olympics

As yet Britain have not qualified for Beijing so we need to do well at the Europeans
