Went out cubbing with Quorn this morning and had a lovely morning. :) We crossed quite a lot of very hilly country today. My boy was very well behaved except for rearing... twice! which is most unlike him as I have owned him for six years and he had only ever reared twice before today and they were nowhere near as big as today. The first one came out of nowhere and I actually thought we were going over for a moment but somehow I managed to stay on. He then did another slightly smaller one about 5 minutes after the first one. Both times were when I was telling him to wait and he was desperate to get going. Part of the problem was I was with a friend on a slightly steadier horse which was quite happy to be at the back. I tried to stay with her so had to hold my boy back but in the end I had to take him further forwards as he just would not settle. He was still very lively but a lot better near the front!

I am concerned that this is going to become a habit and want to sort it out as soon as possible. Just wondered if anyone else has a horse which occasionally rears unexpectedly? How do you deal with it? Any advice would be much appreciated. :)

Well one of mine is fairly prone to rearing anyway, espicially when held back!!! I would say just keep going out and like you were doing at end keep up near the front and going forward, is he used to being more up the front anyway out hunting? Some just take a while to settle bck down into, it's all very exciting you know ;) I would just make sure you have loosish reins and if can feel him getting tense move him forward. Was he putting his head up before rearing if so possibly put a standing martingale on for a few times?

Hi, yes he is usually up near the front. (He is only 15 hands but he loves being with the big boys at the front! :p) He doesn't really put his head up, he tends to nod his head up and down when he gets impatient. He does open his mouth though to evade when I ask him to wait so think I will put a flash on him next time. He was shaking with excitement today though because he was happy to be out again! ;) I am hoping that he will settle back into it after being out a few times. Thank you for the advice. :)

Hehe sounds very much like mine who's 14.2 and umm about 23 yrs, she shakes as well can't travel her in a rug on the way. Yep would say just keep going out (hardy a hardship ;) ) and try a flash, obvisouly if he keeps doing it or does it at home check his saddle, mouth etc, but would think it's more excitement tbh.

Yes, I think he is just excited to be back out and can't wait to get going! Hopefully he will settle back into it soon. :) He doesn't do this at home and is up to date with back, teeth and saddle checks so I don't think it's this - just excitement! :)
