Hey guys, I don't usually venture into this part of the forum, but I have a question.

What IS cubbing? I guess you could call me anti hunting (I don't like it, but I don't actively do anything to stop it) and I really don't want to see anything killed, but I have been invited cubbing and I wasn't sure what is involved. I said I'd let them know.

Any info would be fab :)

cubbing is more correctly known as autumn hunting.

traditionally (pre-ban) it was used as a way to help train young hounds and to help disperse young foxes from their litter den after weaning in order to prevent a "fox problem" developing when a population of foxes in an area got too big to be sustained on wild prey along leading to farmers stock (hens, ducks, lambs etc) being preyed upon especially come the spring.

post-ban it is still used for teaching young hounds, but not the fox dispersal.

Mainly the field use it to get horses fit, and also to teach young horses quietly about hunting as it involves a lot of standing about usually, between trotting from cover to cover. It's usually a very pleasant morning and a lovely way to start your day if you can get up early enough! :)

Thanks for your reply! So, nothing gets killed? That's the main thing I'm worried about :p I'm the biggest fluffy bunny you'll ever meet I think!
YO was telling me they're very accommodating to Ned, as he used to be hunted by someone else and it blows his mind a bit.
I'm not overly fussed about going or not, but I just felt like such a baby! All the kids were talking about doing all the jumps and I was wetting myself at the thought of just joining in haha!

I would say that that is not the aim of the morning! A wayward young hound may catch a bunny but that's about the extent of it.

and depending on who you will be going with there may not even be jumping! we don't do much during autumn hunting...

Why don't you try blood hounding if there is a pack near you?
The blood hounds only hunt the scent of a human runner - their autumn hunting or puppy training is a great introduction to any hunting :)
